recently got asked a couple questions that caught me off gaurd and I couldn't seem to find a good answer for them. 1. Is there any way to tell mountainous from non-mountainous terrain on an enroute Jepp chart? 2. Anyone know of a good reason Jepp changes the color of the MORA at 14,000 ft, and not 13,000 or 22,345ft ?? Just some fat to chew on I suppose.....

1. No. Jeppesen has already figured in the IFR Minimum Safe Altitudes into all the altitudes already listed on their charts, so there is no need to display the mountainous regions. If your truly interested where they are though, go to your "Updates & Info" (I dont know the proper name, jsut where you got all your extra defintions, chart notams, etc.) section in your approach plates, and they typically have a US map in there that will indicate it for you. If not, try your AFD!

2. That's the $50,000 question. That is one of the only IFR questions I've never been able to find an answer to. And every instructor or check pilot has a different answer for you on what it means.

Can anyone back up there answer with proof for #2?

The designated mountainous area chart which also shows the ADIZ boundaries can also be found in section 5-6-5 in the AIM (last page of Chapter 5).

I too have wondered about the color change on the Jepp charts but have had no answer. Best bet may be to just e-mail Jeppesen directly and ask.
