I was wondering if anyone has heard of a corporate flight department ever taking a pay cut? I overheard this the other day at work, but thankfully it didn't apply to my job:)

It happens, but from the guys I've talked to, it usually takes the form of smaller bonuses.

Bonus?:erm:

Now that I have the sarcasm out of my system ;), I've never had a "paycut" but I did go over two years without a raise while corporate officers were taking pay cuts. I found another job six months before the department was closed.

I would think a "salary freeze" could happen....company wide that could include the flight departments..or as others have said there could be a lack of bonuses..

but "pay cuts", like an airline? never heard of that. I know I would personally be pimping the old resume the same day I was offered a "pay cut" -- see ya!

If a company is resorting to that they probably would no longer have a flight department.....nor many employees as they would be jumping ship.

The rest of the worlds working force does not act like airlines.

How about losing an entire flight department with zero notice. Happens often. New management or mismanagement, especially with a public company.

Freezes as well as bonus fluctuations are what we have seen over the years. The freeze was a one time deal but if you have a reasonable base salary the bonus becomes a real bonus and it's gravy when it happens. Just do not plan on it and you will be a lot happier. We also get cost of living most years plus a little depending on whats reflected in the latest Stanton survey. The company is very fair with us depending on their current economic situation. Gotta be making money to share it !!!

Thank heavens for that.

A certain charter company I worked for did cut some pilots pay after the "enron" scandal and 9-11. Actually, they blamed in on the recession and enron.

And to add insult to injury, they didn't do it across the board or thru a seniority type of thing. In fact they furloughed 3 F/O's, and cut the pay of about 3 Captains, again NOT on a seniority basis. The cut was about 35% for some of the captains that had been thier over two years and some one year or less guys were left untouched.

I think it was more personal than professional.

I actually worked at a Fortune 500 flight department and all (company wide) exempt (non-union/management) were given a 10% cut in base salary for the last fiscal quarter one year... It was great for morale. I had just been given my first raise which was about 20% and then about 2-3 weeks later out comes the 10% cut.

I later took the Gulfstream 200 approach to the situation.

Thanks for the replies, I was under the same impression that it was rare for a pay cut to happen. They always came in a "lack of salary increase" type of thing. I've also been exposed to the dissolving of a flight department, and that is the worst, Oh by the way......
