I know it's not unusual to have a one-year training contract.
But, does anyone have to sign one every year for recurrent????

I asked the same question of another operator. They said YES!

I told them to take a hike. I mean No Thanks.

The truth is I don't think so. I have been in this industry for my entire life. I have had a father and his father in the business. I have never heard of anyone doing it.

I don't sign contracts. I have my reasons. Many have been echoed here plenty on the forums.

I always think the operator is a scumbag when I hear or see one. And, that is for an initial and NOT a re-current.

So, the long answer is NO I don't think they are common.

Of course I am leaving aviation since it has lost its collective mind and sense of direction. We keep producing young and inexperienced pilots that are willing to fly at any cost. And, then they wonder down the road why they can't get a pay check that is commensurate with their job.

This cycle is going on while in the midst of a good economy. I can't fathom what the owners/operators will come up with after the economy takes a down turn.

The problem is that there are way to many young inexperienced pilots willing to continue to build time and move up that you are forced to sign and take the wages offered or move on.

Oh, never forget...."Never under-estimate a pilots ability to take a bad job."

This keeps the owners/operators happy knowing that if you don't they can find a (deep in debt) sucker next in line.

Peace and Good Luck.

Again...no thats not common. At our company you are required to sign a 1 year training agreement prior to an initial but definately not for recurrent. If that were the case when could you possible leave and not owe the company money? Most states also have an "At will" employment laws. That means that they can fire you at any time for any reason and you can quit at any time for any reason. So realistically you can bail and never pay no matter what you sign. But, if you take an initial type and don't stay at least one measly year...I think you have bigger problems.

If they are going to make you sign a one year contract every year for recurrent then dont even sign the fist one. Run and run fast.

What do you guys think of a three year training contract? I've got a buddy who will have to commit to a 3 year deal for BE400 initial at Simuflite. I think his boss is out of his mind. As far as I've heard, there's no contract for recurrent training.

Great topic. Previous 135 employer wanted me to sign a 1 year contract for an airplane that I didn't even need sim training for. I told him no and he said sign it or go. He also makes pilots sign contracts for hanger tenents airpanes and for recurrent sim training. The guy is absolutely nuts and clueless. I left and am making 10K more at a job with no contract at all.
