I am interested in doing some contract pilot work. I read that part 135 operators are a good source of work. I am confused as to how a person would be a contract pilot for a part 135. Would you have to have some agreement with a part 135 operator and then go to simcom/FSI and do the training for this company there or is there a general 135 training course offered and then learn the company ops manual with the company?

Or... is part 91 a better bet. Also, how are you guys doing contract work protecting yourself liability wise. I read there is a big difference between an "insured pilot" and an "approved pilot" when doing this type of work on company's insurance policy.

thanks

You have to be trained according to that company's training program. You will be subject to their recurrent training and admistrative requirements as well as their drug screaning and testing program. Your outside commercial flying has to be taken into account for maximum flight times and rest requirements. It is done, but the 135 company has a good bit of liability riding on it to have just an occasional contract pilot on the certificate. It is a bigger commitment from the contract pilot, too, compared to a contract Part 91 gig.

With new rules since 9/11 one of the operators will have to sponsor your training. You can not just go get "135 Qualified" without a specific certificate holders training program.
