I know what "northeast" means, but I'm also seeing terms like "East-northeast". What the Hell? I can only assume that the difference between the two, is that "East-northeast" is more to the east but somewhat northeast???

I don't want to miss questions because of something so stupid.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Unanswered, Good question.

You know the 4 points of the compass: North, East, South, and West.

Now place a point between each of the four points - you have North, North East, East, South East South, etc. that gives you 8 points of the compass.

Place a point between each of the 8 points and you have the 16 cardinal points of the compass:

North
North North East
North East
East North East
East
East South East
South East
South South East
South

And so on.
