I've heard rumors that if you pass through Customs in Ottawa, that customs will seize your laptop and keep it (longer than the normal inspection time). I heard they do this regardless if you are flight crew. Does anyone know if this rumor is true?

Thanks!

If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.

Haven't heard that rumor, but would surprise me for Ottawa. Do you mean entering, customs checks it? (i assume that's what you mean). Flying back from Jordan once, I had a layover in Tel-Aviv and they took my laptop and x rayed it 3 times in different configs and had me turn it on and open an application. Is laptop smuggling that big of a problem in Canada now? What are they doing to it during the inspection?

Hey Oz,

That's the point. I heard that Canadian customs takes your laptop. You don't know what they're doing with your laptop and it's out of your sight. I also heard that you do not get it back soon. You must attempt to claim it when you report for your outbound flight or that Canadian customs will ship it back to an address that you give them. This was the rumor that I heard and I thought it sounded stupid until some other captains I flew with brought it up without me asking.

As for FN FAL, please do us a favor and get off this website. You can post your replies on some cop loving or George W. Kiss A$$ website. Oh yeah, and don't shoot any un-armed military airman laying on the ground.

Hahahaha...you couldn't read that that was satire? I forgive you.

So, the Canadian government takes your computer, downloads the the hard drive and looks at the data. They are well within their authority to do so. Just as the US would have the same authority to do that to a non-citizen entering the US.
