TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A twin-engine Lear jet crashed Tuesday in a nature preserve, killing three people on board, the State Highway Patrol said.
The plane was trying to land at Toledo Express Airport when it crashed and caught fire about 2 p.m., patrol dispatcher Bob Brehm said. He did not know how many people were on board.
Firefighters were still trying to extinguish the flames an hour-and-a-half later.
The plane went down in a remote area of the Oak Openings Preserve MetroPark, Toledo Metroparks spokesman Scott Carpenter said. There are no shelter houses or parking lots in that area of the 3,500-acre nature preserve.
I just called my office, and all our planes are accounted for.
Prayers for the families.
