There was a thread here earlier about comm long x-countries.
It's time for mine and I'm a bit confused on what's valid and what's not. I was told I better fly a triangle xc, and I should go at least 300 NM away from the base airport with 3 landings. (that would be way over 600NM altogether)
In my interpretation there is no need to overdo this. The FAR only says 250NM from the dept. point, with landings at 3 different airports and altogether 300NMs. So, if I fly 251 NMs, do 3 landings on the way, turn around and go home, that should suffice.
Advise appreciated.

You understand correctly. The 300 nm minimum distance is for if you were to do a one-way flight. Otherwise, you will fly at least 500 nm to reach an airport 250 nm away and return, meeting the 300 nm minimum requirement for the flight.

So, are you also saying that you already meet all the 50 hours PIC x/c, or that this minimal trip will put you at the 50 hour mark?

Thanks for the quick replies.
The 50 hrs x/c PIC has already been met for the instrument rating (I fly in a Part 61 school)
