just got a phone call from comair. i'm curious to know about growth there. i know it's slow, but they seem to keep hiring. anyone know what the reserve times are there? also, is upgrade less than 4 years right now?

thanks

we're taking delivery of 7 or 8 70-seaters this year, which is why we're hiring @ 125 new pilots. that's it for growth for a while - we didn't get any RJs in the RFP bid, and popular opinion is that the DoJet is going to Skyway. so except for the 70s, any talk of growth at Comair is purely speculative.

it's been a while, but i think you'd need @ 150 below you to get off reserve. anyone know for sure?

upgrade times - well, who knows? with no planned deliveries beyond these 70-seaters, it's indefinite until more growth is announced.

but despite all that, it's a great group and it's been a great place to work...

The last of the newhires in 04, I would expect to be on reserve for 2-3 years. Make sure you don't commute!

I also heard that we are getting 9 50 seaters BACK from Skywest. They were on a short term lease while we went out on strike. Kinda funny how the co hasn't mentioned this.

Depending where you're commuting from, commuting on reserve should not be an issue. Expect to fly a lot of reserve however. Right now the reserve guys/gals are flying all the time.

Hi folks. I'm glad to see this discussion about Comair because at least they are interviewing and doing some hiring. I'd really like to get an interview there but I don't know how long it takes for my resume to work its way up from the bottom of the huge stack. I know there may not be alot of movement there but unfortunately I'm kind of used to that after spending a year on reserve at ACA and then getting furloughed. The difference for me would be that I would move back to my hometown (Cincy) whereas I was crashpadding in Chicago which I hated (although I have to say that my crash pad buddies were super cool). As for flying alot on reserve, that's what I like. It's the sitting around waiting that I have trouble with.

OK, so my point in writing is that it seems that several of you out there fly for Comair and maybe one of you (or even all of you) would be willing to take a resume in to Sharon Jones or someone who you may know at HR and get it looked at. I've been sending letters on and off for a couple of years now to no avail. But now that I have CRJ time under my belt, my resume should look more enticing to them. If I could pass the training at ACA then I can pass it at Comair (easier the 2nd time around I would hope!)

Thanks for your patience in reading this and if you know of a good way to get their attention, please let me know.

I used lightly puce colored paper, scented with my wifes Sung perfume... got the call 3 weeks later! Scratch and sniff stickers seem to help too, keeps it fun.

Seriously, it's tough to say what makes one candidate stick out more than another. Perhaps they have a pile of their "best of's" and close their eyes and start grabbing. Your CL-65 time should definately grab their attention though. Hang in there!

life on reserve

what is the typical schedule of a reserve pilot at comair? 5 on 2 off? i would have to commute for almost a year. also is there talks of opening another base?

11 days off in a 30 day month and 12 in a 31. (Not quite as Jan and March are messed with to make them both 30 days month to give Feb 30 as well.)

You are guaranteed a block of 4 off and a block of 3 off that can't be changed without your permission. The other 4 or 5 days will be thrown in and could be anywhere. We also get to bid on reserve windows.

Does Comair pay salary and hotel while in training? If so what is salary based on?

Comair pays for a week at the hotel, then you're on your own. we shoved 7 classmates into a 3-br apartment and pretended we were back in college. good times.

$250/week during training until you're out of the sim, then first-year pay. as much as that may suck, look at our 2nd-year pay rates before you criticize...

Reserve

Not knowing much about 121 life, could someone explain to me what being on reserve is?

asa

since comair and asa are owned by delta, can i ask the comair recruiter if i can get an asa interview instead of comair? yea, that probably wouldnt be a good idea. i tell ya, every regional and national airline has called me except asa. i guess theyre snobs.

do a search on a thread called Question for Comair guys??

one of the many places you'll find the reserve system explained, in particular for Comair....

As far as commuting and reserve, it is not that bad. I have been doing it for 3 months and as long as you keep a good attitude and know that you may lose some of your free time to commuting it is OK. My commute has 4 flights a day on Comair in and out.
