Comair Announces 10 Growth Aircraft

President Fred Buttrell sent all Comair employees the following memo regarding growth aircraft:

Fred made the announcement in a meeting with employees in the general office.

Today I am pleased to announce that Delta has decided to contract with Comair for additional flying that will add 10 CRJ200 aircraft to our fleet. This news puts Comair back on a growth track and gives us the ability to begin adding new flights and employees. As I have communicated to you in recent months, Comair's ability to grow again has been achieved by our continued focus on addressing competitive gaps in our cost structure and improving our operation and service quality.

We will begin phasing the 50-seat aircraft into our schedule this June with all 10 joining the Comair fleet by the end of this year or early 2006. Based on current network plans, the first jets will operate between destinations in Florida and other key regional markets.

Evaluations continue for additional 70-seat flying opportunities. Decisions on specific aircraft type, delivery schedules, etc., depend on securing the right aircraft costs, aircraft financing, and being able to offer competitive operating costs.

All members of our team, from employees joining the company today to our 25-year veterans, remain instrumental in Comair's ability to secure more flying opportunities in the future. People in every area of the company have stepped up by making difficult decisions that help the company pursue a winning growth strategy. Maintaining this collective approach is important to our long-term success and to making our airline a great place to work.

New airplanes mean increased accountability for us to deliver on our focus areas of improved operational reliability and ensuring customer service excellence. We have two sets of customers - the traveling public who flies on our jets and Delta. By delivering safe, reliable, friendly and helpful service 1,130 departures a day in a cost-effective manner, we serve both customers. No regional carrier is guaranteed flying opportunities by virtue of ownership or reputation. As my old college football coach said, "You are only as good as your last play and you have to earn your position every day." This makes it imperative that we keep winning and delivering on initiatives to improve operations and customer service, and cultivate a culture that stresses servant leadership and treating each other and our customers well. A working timeline of corporate initiatives showing how we are going to accomplish this can be found on EPIC along with this memorandum.

Today's growth aircraft announcement is an important victory for Comair and huge turnaround from the company's low point in December, but it represents only one theater of battle in a campaign with many challenges to come. Winning makes work fun, success begets success, and today's victory gives us some welcome tailwind to help us do these things. It takes all of us working together and respecting each other to produce the Comair solution. Today's news is at least one indication that we are headed along the right path, especially when you consider how far we have come in a few short months. Imagine how much farther we can go if we maintain our momentum and focus.

Thank you for helping us fly, serve and win.

Rumor has it they are the I-Air planes that GE took back.

I'm not if these are the same aircraft, but didn't DAL make a commitment to GE for some RJs in exchange for some $$$ back in Nov/Dec?

Funny how Comair was able to so quickly secure financing for 10 a/c so shortly after all work groups (except mx I think) agreed to concessions!!
I still think Fred knew of how many of what kind and where they were going all along........
Hope it was worth it in the long run for ya.

No.. We were supposed to get 10 -200s and 25 70 seaters. The 70s will either be E-170s or CR7s...

Actually at the last meeting with the Delta VP Fred said that it would either be the E-170 or a CRJ 705 which i had not heard of but he said was a CRJ 900 body with 70 seats, 6 first and 64 coach.

If I've read this right it looks like a 705 is a 700 with 75 seats, which is 5 more than we have now!

Did you read what he wrote?? 6 first class seats and 64 coach.. 70 seats.

looking at the Bombardier site they've got the 705 listed under the 700 fuselage and the 900 fuselage (but with the 700 designator). Under the 700 fuselage it's 75 seats. I don't see where a 705 is a 900 fuselage with 70 seats (including first class).

:)

One Question....

Are they going to write 61% of the pilot's names on the airplanes? You know...since they bought them. Thanks for nothing JC!

To the 39%er's...thanks for trying.

Yea, way to go.... go get your picket signs ready.

Bend over and I'll show you what I am going to do with it. Sorry, Fred already took care of that.

Any chance Fred will be coming back looking for more give backs for the additional jets in order to offer competitive costs?

Let's hope that if Comair gets additional 70 seat flying, they get the E170 because it is far superior to the CR7 or CR9 - no question about it. I think Buttrell has even acknowledged the improved passenger comfort for the E170 in recent articles. C'mon Fred - go Brazilian next time!

Well, if he does, he loses the concession we already gave. The terms of the cocession say they have to get 25 seventy seat a/c by a specified time. I don't have it in front of me, but it is some time in 2008. Will they come back after that and ask for more... they always do!

Yeah sure. 20 million over several years sure helps offset a 1.1 Billion dollar quarterly loss.

Those of you who think Delta will see 2008 in its current form, with any of its current contracts, please raise your hands.

I think everybody is in agreement that the E170 is the superior product but I think it will come down to financing. From what I'm hearing (emphasize water cooler chat), Bombardier is begging, practically willing to give away more 70 seaters just to stay in the commercial aircraft business where as Embraer isn't willing to budge an inch on price. It makes business sense as they have the hot product right now, so why should they? So while we would all love to have the E170, when you combine Delta's dire financial straits as well as sweet deals thrown at us from Bombardier, we may get more CL-70's if we get anything at all. It's all about the $$$ and right now the big D is looking ugly...gotta love being a wholly owned. Anybody out there with a couple of hundred mil want to buy a regional airline?

I was under the impression that this was for additional 70 seaters above and beyond what the Jets4Concessions deal secured.

I interviewed @ CMR on 4/19 and in the company briefing, the Flight Ops rep also mentioned the probability of getting the CRJ - 700s and/or CRJ - 705s were likely, due to commonality of fleet / financing / training reasons. For what its worth.

Of course it won't, but who really thinks that the CMR pilots Jets4Concessions deal actually financed the handful of growth aircraft management used to entice their concession. If management thinks they can save $20M by floating a handful of 70 seat small jets in front of the CMR pilots they'll do it. History could repeat itself.
