United Steel Workers? April Fools!
United Steel Workers? April Fools!
Now you've done it. Joey Merchant will be along any minute to tell you that you're licking Prater's boots and waving ALPA pom-poms.Well, not to be confused with Rez or PCL, but here goes:
The pilots would be best represented by staying with ALPA and getting personally involved with their own union. Volunteer to be on a committee, at the very least. ALPA is the sum of the pilots who show up to meetings and volunteer. What do you know, that's just like with any other democratic, participant based system.
Your union volunteers do their best to represent all of their memberships, but it's a h#ll of a lot easier to do so when more pilots are actually involved. If you don't feel well represented, show up and let your reps know, or run to be a rep, yourself.
If you want to improve ALPA, change ALPA, or just plain support ALPA, you have to show up and chip in (beyond just paying dues, although that certainly is part of it). ALPA can once again be very powerful (they certainly have been in the past), and are only limited by the efforts of the membership. Remember, you need unity to have strength. Unity is possible, but it does take effort.
(Here's a hint: if you're one of those "ALPA is not doing enough for me" types, while not doing something to support your own union, you are making it harder for ALPA to do anything for you.)
ALPA is not "them", ALPA is "us".
