So can someone tell me what the deal is with CMH's tsa screeners and the hate they have for NJA pilots? I just had a awesome 40 min tug and swab today when the ssss pax infront of me was grabbed and tickled for only 10min.

Someone poop in their luch box or something back in the day?

I've noticed this too as I am CMH based for my current company (start at NJA Oct 8). I don't get why they won't let NJA carry liquids through. Does this only happen in CMH or all airport security checkpoints? Are you not considered a crewmember in uniform?

The rumor is that the TSA lead at CMH used to work for NJA and didn't leave on good terms. Therefore he has it our for us. If you airline out of CMH, you are treated like an ordinary passenger whether you are in uniform or not. Do not expect to get your toothpaste through unless it meets the 3-1-1 rule.

Congrats on the hire. Acutally most airports are really cool to us. They always say how stupid it is to secondary the frac guys. LIT will just sign you off with no taint tickle. CMH just seems to go above and beyond to make life as hard as possible for that 30ft of GED Nazi playground.

I personally don't because from my former airline life I learned there are 2 types of baggage. Carry on and lost.
Its not hard to put a weeks worth in a stealth bag. Just learn the magic of the "roll up" technique

I've heard a lot of guys just check their bag when airlining. Do you suggest doing that?

I always check my bag at CMH. Other airports, it is usually a carry on.

Don't expect any special treatment at CMH or HPN. We're just citizens to TSA at those locations. Pull you liquids, take off your shoes and be thankful for everywhere else.

NO, just go TSA compliant and go on your merry way. Unless you need the extra big bottle of hair gel it shouldn't be that hard.

That way you are ready for whatever they throw at you.

Shaving cream, toothpaste, GermX, BenGay (too much running as a younger man), and sunblock (already had 2 skin cancers removed---learned my lesson). Doesn't exactly fit in a sandwich bag. Also had those losers at CMH deny the sandwich bag b/c it was not ZipLoc, but rather a string pull PROVIDED BY THE MWAA AIRPORT AUTHORITY.
Most airport are OK though.

I was also told that if your bags are lost when they are checked the company will not have you do any flying until your receive them. Is this true?

The company MAY pressure you to fly. Just say NO.
They'll let you wait in place for your bags to show up.
It happens fairly often.

I have checked my bag since I was hired at EJA/NJA. So far never lost. Check it sit in F and have a cocktail!

I am not going ANYWHERE until my bag is in my hands.

Yea good luck with that. If the airline loses your bag thats not the company's problem. If you going to check it on the way to work you better make sure you have your essentials in your carry on bag. Refusing a trip because you've lost your bag is not an acceptable excuse.

I've been at NJA 10 years, ozpilot. I've had the airlines lose my bags several times, and the same for my F/Os. In each and every instance, I've told the company: "We're gonna sit until our crew bags show up."

And sit we did.

I never heard another word about it.

Well Mr. Oz, I must respectfully disagree. As much as I would LIKE to keep my bag with me, TSA and the airlines regularly conspire to make this impossible.

First example - Day 1. My company sends me to a green airplane, with a live leg scheduled 1 hour after my ETA. Their airline of choice? Gulfstream International Airlines (read: BE1900). There are other options, but this one must be the most "cost effective" I keep my "tour" bag with me through security and check a small one with my toiletries, etc. You know, stuff I can easily replace. Now, of course I have to "planeside check" my bag, and expect to retrieve it upon arrival at my destination. It didn't make it. Nor did any other bags. They were all left on the ramp, ostensibly due to "weight and balance" issues. I refused to fly until I got my bag. Fortunately there was another flight 90 min behind the first one and the owner disservice was minimal. But it was not my problem.

Then there's the time I'm boarding (Zone 8) on a Delta 767. I'm close to the last one to board. The 80 year old lead FA says "Sorry, no room in the overhead for a rollaboard. Yes, I see you're in uniform, sir, but we just don't have the room. We'll check it and you'll get it at baggage claim at your destination (via ATL)." Of course, you see what's coming. It never made it. I did fly 2 legs that time, but only because I was certain we were returning to our original departure point and was pretty confident my bag would catch up with me. (it did)

These scenarios happen regularly and I'm sure we all have similar stories. It's going to get worse. The airlines are beginning to realize that we compete with them for high priced seats. When we travel in uniform (which I do to facilitate a quick "go" on day 1) they're going to be less likely to do anything to facilitate our travel. I guess I could be wrong...

Well ok - that hasn't been my experience.

Must be an OH thing?????

Got a tug and rub in TOL like I haven't had in years today.

They were nice and didn't chuck my oversize can of foot spray and Dapper Dan. :) Just very thorough on pulling out everthing from my flight bag and roller.

Every airport has been pretty cool with "crew bags", except for the one's mentioned above:

CMH, HPN and I'd ad TOL (I did have the dredded SSS, so that may have been the factor). CMH and HPN are by far the worst offenders and I just check my bag if I have to deal with them.

For future reference, Gulfstream is on our company's prohibited airlines list. You can make the flight manager aware of this next time and they'll have travel re-work your arrangements.

You can check that list on crewops.
