How come everytime I am approaching an en route fix and the airplane is about to start a turn to the next fix, ATC clears me to that next fix? It is getting suspicious. I heard that ATC tallies up their "cleared directs." That would make sense because it seems like they get to chalk one up without having to do any work, ie., coordinate with the next sector or clear it of traffic as you are almost on the same track anyway. I don't know how many times we haven't asked for direct and we are so close to the fix that it starts to flash and we get cleared direct to the next fix. The DTGO doesn't even reduce a mile.
