Simply put there are good squadrons and there are bad squadrons. Some have a lot of political bs and favoritism. Others are in dire need of members and pilots.

My first squadron that I joined in college was 85% aviation college students and we flew the heck out of the plane (both for official CAP activities and for training). I even got a good amount of time as the squadron instructor.

My second squadron was in the Northern VA area. Lots of members, lots of BS, and lots of people who let the little shiny rank go to their head. I didn't stick around long with that unit.

Give it a try, see if you like it. A lot of squadrons have connections with military units... we used to get old uniforms and flight suits from the local base. These in turn were distributed among the members, so noone had to buy uniforms. See if you can't work out a deal with the local national guard or base. You'd be surprised what you can scrounge up if you have a good supply officer.
