How difficult is it to get from Charleston, SC (CHS) to BWI as an off-line commuter? I hope to travel the day prior to or after a trip maybe once every other week if I can get four days off in a row.

I have a crashpad (friend's house) in DC, but own a house in CHS.

Appreciate any words of wisdom.

Bwi?

Dude ... long time, no see. Are you still activated?

The commute from CHS to ATL is easy -- 8 flights per day on Delta (except for the weekends). I've been doing it for over a year, and haven't had to use the jumpseat or hitchhike just yet. From ATL to BWI, Delta has 13 flights per day, but I have no idea how the availability runs. If you can't make it out of ATL, give me a call, and I'll buy you a beer ...

P.S. What's up with that ugly mutt on your profile? :)

CAE to ATL will be the challenging leg. Not badmouthing Delta, but like a lot of majors they have a 2 jumpseat max on mainline flights. (ie...if there are 2 jumpseats in the cockpit they will release 2 seats in the cabin to jumpseating crewmembers). ASA and Comair allow unlimited jumpseaters, so if you aren' hopping mainline it might be easier.

AirTran has a new fee policy. About a year or so ago, they started saying that after the first or second offline jumpseater would pay $25. However, (and I don't want to get anyone in trouble here...) I have YET to have to pay for a ride on AT, usually just get waved on regardless of who else is riding.

I think as long as you can stomach a two hop commute, getting through ATL on DAL or AT shouldn't be too tough.

Good luck.

Blasphemy...that is no mutt but rather UGA V

I'm no longer activated and no longer in the C-17, but I still live in CHS (DI to be exact). Story better told over a beer...The unit was very supportive in the transfer due to a family illness. Give me a shout when you get a chance. If you don't have my numbers send me a PM or ask MJ, Thiggy or Super Hubes.

If your crashpad is in DC just fly into DCA and take the metro. Mesa runs several flights a day direct CHS-DCA or CAE-DCA, and we've got an unlimited J/S agreement with them.

Your other options are two-leg it through ATL or CLT, or drive up to MYR and J/S on Hooters Air! Be careful if you choose Hooters, they don't fly on a couple days in the middle of the week (not that you'll have to worry about flying in the middle of the week for a while...).

I've used all of the above options to return to God's country for visits, the Mesa flights are the least hassle and would be my first choice.
