Do the airlines not check on a childs age regarding this reg?

"Except as provided in this paragraph, each person on board an aircraft operated under this part shall occupy an approved seat or berth with a separate safety belt properly secured about him or her during movement on the surface, takeoff, and landing. For seaplane and float equipped rotorcraft operations during movement on the surface, the person pushing off the seaplane or rotorcraft from the dock and the person mooring the seaplane or rotorcraft at the dock are excepted from the preceding seating and safety belt requirements. A safety belt provided for the occupant of a seat may not be used by more than one person who has reached his or her second birthday. Notwithstanding the preceding requirements, a child may:

(1) Be held by an adult who is occupying an approved seat or berth, provided the child has not reached his or her second birthday and the child does not occupy or use any restraining device; or

(2) Notwithstanding any other requirement of this chapter, occupy an approved child restraint system furnished by the certificate holder or one of the persons described in paragraph (a)(2)(i) of this section, provided:

(i) The child is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or attendant designated by the child's parent or guardian to attend to the safety of the child during the flight"

It clearly states the child can't have reached their 2nd birthday, but I'm hearing about older children riding in the lap's of parents. And the airline never checks on the actual age of the child or does not enforce the reg.

My son, who is now three, has been flying on airliners since he was less than one year of age. No one has ever asked to see proof of his age; in fact the ticket agents usually return his passport to me without even looking at it. The requirement that kids 2 and older have their own seat appears to be enforced by the honor system. I have seen some absolutely huge "2 year olds" sitting on their parents' laps. Given the safety record of airlines, the odds of a lap child being hurt are pretty low, but I'm a chicken and have always purchased a seat for him, even when he was younger than two. Many airlines offer discounted seats for kids under two.
On the other hand, agents have occasionally checked our car seat for a sticker verifying that it has been approved for use in aircraft.

I know if I have a child in question, I will ALWAYS ask to see that childs birth certificate.

I know an occurence when an agent did not check the childs age, the child sat in her mother's lap..not quite sure what happened next, but I know we did have to do a self-disclosure
and it cost us some $$$. (like $27000).

It is too expensive not to check on those kinds of things..
if the child is walking..........we are required to ask for proof of age.

If you are flying with a child older than 2 and trying to beat the system...you could get hit up for some big $$$ to buy a full fare ticket for you child at check in.

just something to think about....

you can bet that southwest checks. i saw it myself. on monday nights on A&E. 10pm ---be sure to tune in...
