checkride re-takes..?

passing along a question from a student that I don't know the answer to... if someone busts a checkride (practical portion), and their pink slip outlines 1 or 2 areas of deficiency, does the examiner have latitude to ask the applicant to perform maneuvers outside of the areas listed on the pink slip? Is there typically an oral portion to the second checkride?
 
I had to retake one section on my CFII. There was no other oral or anything like that. I landed went up with my instructor for a quick flight ,and then flew with the examiner again. Very simple. I suppose it all depends on how good of a stick that person is, and if the initial ground was shaky.

It's common practice to only be retested on what you failed though

I asked this same question to an examiner one time, and the answer he gave me was along the lines: "we can certainly ask you to perform any maneuver which is on the PTS, regardless of if you passed it satisfactorily the first time - however it wouldn't be something we could turn around and fail you on, unless of course you did something during that maneuver that adversely affected our safety of flight."

As for the oral, I've never known a checkride re-take to include an oral, unless of course the ride had been failed previously for an area during that portion. But I would assume he would also have full latitude to ask questions if he wanted if it pertained to a particular reason why the student failed the previous time. (For instance, the student busted airspace, or a shelf area - the examiner would probably quiz him a little further on his exact knowledge of airspace and why that happened.)

thanks for the responses.. i think the issue is that she wants to retake with a different examiner (for various reasons), and is wondering what to be prepared for, other than the failed area. i guess the best advice is to prepare for all maneuvers, especially the problem one(s).
 
If the issue is her taking a checkride with another examiner, I would highly recommend you make sure she's proficient in all the other maneuvers.

Keep in mind that this examiner has never flown with her before and has no idea what she's about. Prepare her for that fact.

If an Examiner or FAA Inspector conducts a check ride and finds only one or two areas that caused a failure of the ride they can list that on the pink slip. They can retest on only those areas or any area they decide. If you go to another Examiner or Inspector, unless they have information from the first Examiner/Inspector they may conduct the entire exam or part of the exam as they see fit.

Chapter 5, paragraph 27


C. Credit Given for Satisfactorily Completed Areas of Operation or Tasks. An applicant for retesting may receive credit for those areas of operation satisfactorily completed; however, an examiner may re-examine an applicant on any area of operation required for the certificate or rating sought. If an examiner has reason to doubt an applicant’s competence in areas of operation for which the applicant received credit during a previous test, or if more than 60 days have elapsed since the previous practical test, the examiner must re-examine the applicant on all areas of operation required for that certificate or rating. Applicants who do not have their FAA Form 8060-5 must take the entire practical test. --------------------
