Airline pilots are #2? The list fails to mention Firemen...I know that has to be more dangerous than flying.

Also, the most common cause of death on construction sites is electricution according to OSHA...it's common to see Electricians listed as the most dangerous of the contruction trades. I was suprised they weren't list as well.

I could think of plenty of professions less dangerous than flying a modern $13 million dollar airplane...

Interesting list....

Well, close. Take a second look, it says airplane pilots, not airline pilots. I would agree that being an airline pilot is probably a pretty safe occupation. However "airplane pilot" includes a lot of non-airline pilots. Crop sprayers, fire fighting pilots. In Alaska, commercial pilot is *the* most dangerous occupation according to the folks who track that (NIOSH, I think) In years past, it was either timber harvesting or commercial fishing (the Bering Sea fishing grounds eats a couple of boats and crews every winter) but in recent years the logging industry and fishing industry have cleaned up thier act, leaving flying as the most dangerous job in Alaska

"I'm from insurance.com.. and *you* sir, yes *you*. have the 2nd most dangerous job EVER!! that's right! Would you like to buy some life insurance?? cmon I know you pilots are a lot richer than fireman or police officers.. why do you think I put you on the top of the list??"

lol.. public perceptions.. :D

That's a bunch of crap. I'd like to see how they come up with that. Minus 9/11, there have been very few deaths in 121 flying in the last 5 years. There have been 3 cops and 5 firefighters killed in my city alone in that same time frame. Crap. -Bean

Looks like A Squared is right. That makes it a little more believable, just a little. -Bean

Hey it's changed from about 4 yrs ago. The number 1 then was the off shore fisherman. Pilots were still number 2.

Airplane Pilot = FREIGHT DOG

Author paints with a wide brush....

Timber cutters
Airplane pilots
Construction laborers
Truck drivers
Farm occupations
Groundskeepers
Laborers
Police and detectives
Carpenters
Sales occupations

This guy must be related to Kitt Darby. It looks like he/she is using the broadest terms to make you think you need his/her product.

Does the above list sound something like this?:

Attention Pilots, 8500 current airline pilots will retire in the next 5 years making the largest Pilot shortage ever. Join Air Inc. now and get the edge on the job you want or be stuck as a redheaded stepchild at a commuter airline for life like thoes Allegheny guys.

What Kitt tells you is there are many guys hitting age 60, WHAT HE ELECTS TO LEAVE OUT is there are that many (or more) pilots not hitting age 60 that are on furlough awaiting callback, plus regional/commuter/corp and other qualified guys chomping at the bit for the scraps of off the street hirring that may come along.

"Sales occupations " - I didn't know the high school chicks working down at the Gap were in so much danger.

"Groundskeepers " - what????? Maybe that Caddy Shack guy????

O well - just someone else trying to take your cash

When I was a senior in college I had an oil company talk to me about being a mechanical engineer on an oil rig in the gulf. The job entailed diving down to inspect weld on rigs and such. At the time I new a guy in a flying club who had flown helos off rigs for the same oil company. He told me why thoes welder/diver guys get like 200,000 per year. About 50% just drop dead between age 40-45. I knew another guy who was a diver and he told me the same thing.

Groundskeepers...what?
Don't laugh. I know of a groundskeeper who was run over by an ambulance that was on its way to a Beech Bonanza crash site.

(I'm not kidding!)

Triple-whammy! Groundskeeper, firemen/paramedics, and and airplane pilot!

I worked parts of 8 seasons as a groundskeeper on a golf course and let me tell you the danger is never ending. I suppose there could be an occasional mower accident or something now and then....not that i have ever seen. Although i have been hit by a golf ball, it was minor. I think we need to look at the people in sales occupations though. They are the true unsung heroes putting their life on the line day in and day out. Please join me in a moment of silence to honour the fallen sales people who are truly working in a danger zone.

Believe it or not...women statistically have the highest risk of being murdered on the job.

I will assume this is a loose attemp at satire, however, the reason "sales people" are on the list is because convenience store clerks are more likely to be killed on the job than a cop.

I believe it...I've worked with several women I'd like to murder. :D

(Attention FBI internet snoopers: I'm just kidding.)

What about the Alaska Lobster Fisherman, or Coal Miners, and Folks that work on the Deck of Aircraft Carriers?

Those jobs provide the least risk of being murdered on the job. Since those occupations are not directly tied in with handling sums of money in safes or cash registers, those guys should be o.k.

I remember looking at insurance and being an airplane pilot wasn't a big deal, until I told them that I fly helicopters in the reserves - then the insurance jumped up drastically.

The Discovery Channel had a special on not too long ago about the world's most dangerous jobs. I could have sworn Alaskan king crab fisherman was the winner.

Like I said in my previous post, being a pilot in Alaska is more hazardous than COmmercial fishing in Alaska.

The Official NIOSH statistics for the state of Alaska are as follows:
The number given is the calculated number of fatalities per 100,000 workers per year

Commercial pilot: 410
Logger: 150
Commercial fisherman: 124
AK average, all occupations 22
US Average, all occupations 4.4
