South Carolina's Charleston International Airport set its all-time passenger record in 2011.
More than 2.5 million passengers flew through the airport last year, breaking the airport's previous record of 2.3 million that was set in 2008, according to ABC News 4 of Charleston.
Chip Limehouse, chairman of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, credits the arrival of Southwest Airlines this past May as the catalyst for the record year.
"This new service increased competition in our region and provided additional travel opportunities for our citizens at a lower cost," Limehouse tells The Post and Courier of Charleston.
