Travelers flying into and out of Lindbergh Field on
the first day of the Memorial Day weekend were expected to experience delays Friday due to a software problem at a facility that controls air traffic at 21 Southern California airports.
The problem occurred after 5:30 a.m. at the San Diego-based Terminal Radar Approach Control -- TRACON -- facility, which is responsible for air traffic control at Lindbergh Field, Los Angeles International Airport and 19 other Southern California airports, the Federal Aviation Administration reported.
The surveillance radar was reported to be resolved, but more separation time will be required between departures and arrivals, according to Heidi Connell of Lindbergh Field's operations support.
"It's going to slow the day down," she said.
The cause of the outage was not immediately reported.
