My grandfather owned a 1946 Taylorcraft which I flew for about a year before he passed away. He had always meant to change it over to my name but he was taken faster than he had thought. Now that he is passed away I am not sure of how to get this done for insurance purposes. My grandmother can sign it over and she is the one in charge of the estate, I just don't know which form I am supposed to use. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

My condolences as well.

tcraft, follow the "Aircraft Registration Forms" link on the site that JAFI linked. There are two forms you need there and a third that isn't there.

The two forms you need (with direct pdf links are):
8050-2 Bill of Sale; and

AFS-750-93 Information in Recording of Aircraft Ownership and Security Documents

The 8050-2 is the document that transfers ownership. The FAS-750-93 has the instructions for filling out the 8050-2. There's a section for how to fill it out and what additional documents you need when the "seller" is an "estate."

The third, that isn't on the site, is the FAA application for registration. The FAA still uses a multi-part NCR form for this (one copy acts as the new temporary registration). You can get this form at any FSDO.

If you need help putting this together, the lawyer who has been helping with the estate (if there is one) should be able to help. If not, a lawyer from the AOPA's legal services panel or an aircraft title company would be a good source. Your local FBO or a pilot friend who has bought airplanes, might also be able to walk you through it.

Thanks a lot for all of the help. Looks like I've got a lot of paperworking ahead of me, but it's definitely doable. Thanks again!!

Look up Heir of law on the FAA website and also a new registration form. Heir of law needs to be signed and notorized. (your grandmother will sign) Registration is pretty straight forward. FAA has some pretty easy going regs as far as transferring the deceased aircraft.

Take care

(already done this twice for my deceased father)

In addition you can pick up registration forms at any FSDO/GADO (appointment only), this is a triplicate form so it cannot be printed online. (or call the fsdo and have them send you it, or call OKC) The "Heir of Law" is a one page document (this can be printed from FAA.gov) This is the one that has to be signed and notorized by your grandmother. Really easy.

This is the link for the "heir at law".

That form is for situations in which there is no formal administration of the estate, which may or may not be the case here.

Yea your right I believe you can only use that form if it is NOT going through probate.
