Three people were killed when a plane crashed while trying to land Monday night at Briscoe Field in Gwinnett County, officials said.
The crash happened near the south side of the airport off U.S. 29 near Boulderbrook Circle. The victims, believed to be two women and one man, were ejected when the twin-engine plane crashed, according to Fire Lt. Craig Stanley. It was a Cessna Chancellor 414.
The pilot of the plane had radioed that the plane was having trouble about 8:40 p.m. and that he was attempting to land. A short time later, emergency dispatchers received reports of an explosion near the airport.
The plane struck some heavy equipment belonging to a construction company, but there was no damage to buildings or other injuries reported on the ground.
No information was immediately available about the identities of the victims.
The plane, registered to a company in Pembroke Pines, Fla., had taken off from Palm Beach County Glades Airport and was headed to Briscoe Field, said Laura Brown of the Federal Aviation Administration. “It is my understanding that it was very foggy at the time,” she said.
After the plane was cleared to land, the airport lost radio contact with it, she said.
