Curious Gabe wants to know:

So a guy has a CRJ(CL-65) type. Can he just walk up to a Challenger and fly it?

The unimportant question:

If a guy has a CL604 type, can he just walk up to a CRJ and fly it?

Now the important question:

Why in the world would he want to?

To answer your question, from a stick and rudder perspective, the airplanes are similar enough that the CL65 pilot could probably fly it. Without a CL604 rated pilot as PIC, it would not be legal.

The Challenger 850 is the CL 65 Type. In reality yes you can walk up and fly any Challenger with CRJ experience to include the Challenger 300. But, legally no! However, I would say that you are perfectly qualified as a right seat hire into a coporate Challenger. The problem is finding a Corporate CP that isn't biased.

Since you broached it, let me pile on. How do you think that CP came to have a "bias"? Most of us call it judgement. By the time someone becomes a CP in the Corporate world they have seen quite a bit. They have seen the airline crowd flood the corporate market in downturns and leave them high and dry when the majors are hiring. They have had their highly valued clients called meat puppets, walk-on baggage, etc. They have had to teach and train and explain over and over again that this is different from the airlines. They have had to listen to endless diatribes of "stupid management this, and stupid management that" along with "at __________ (fill in the blank) Airlines, we never had to do that".

I have personal experience of all the above. I also have the experience of flying with former 121 pilots where I have experienced none of the above. I will say the former are more numerous than the latter.

The so-called "bias" is what the rest of us call good judgement. Though not applicable in every case, it is difficult after seeing the above a few dozen times not to generalize. I can assure you that the same "bias" resides with 121 CPs with regard to corporate pilots.

In the end all this means is that if your experience is all 121, and you want to fly corporate, you are going to have to go the extra mile to overcome every negative experience that CP has had with a 121 that that CP attributes to their background rather than their personality.

Any corporate department worth working for should pay for type specific training for all new hires, but I do agree that experieince in a CL65 is certainly a plus for a company that operates the CL600/601/604.

We actually have 3 former 121 guys (myself included) and dont seem to have any problems with the CP or the other pilots. It is however a shame that there are some CP/DOs out there that still look down on any pilot with a 121 background. I guess they dont realize the cusotmer service thing isnt that difficult, be poilte, friendly and treat your pax. as you would want to be treated. On the flip side, Im sure there is more than one horror story that begins with " I get paid to fly, not to clean the cabin , pour coffee, etc......."

Basically just agreeing with what FlyFlyFly says.
