I've started studying for the CFII written and have been studying off of an old Instrument Rating question bank. Is the II written the exact same thing as the Instrument written?

Yes. Common practice to take the IRA and FII at the same time if you are going to go CFI. All questions come from the "instrument bank".

It probably wouldn't hurt you to take the IGI test as well, it's drawn from the exact same question bank as IRA and FII.

Plus, with the IGI test results you can walk into a FSDO and walk out with the Ground Instructor Instrument ticket. You may not ever need a GI ticket, but it never hurts to have one eh?

If you get the CFII then you don't need the IGI. You dont need it if you have the II.

No but you can immediately begin giving instrument dual in a simulator for money with an IGI. It will also lock in your FOI written so in the event you don't get a CFI/II rating in the next two years your FOI written won't expire. If you have the $90 to blow like Princedietrich said it can't hurt to have one if anything it could help pay your way to getting the II.

Yeah definitely do the two tests back to back. You'll finish early anyway so just take a 15 minute snack break and walk right back in and do the next one.. identical exam pool and it will be as fresh as can be in your head.

And should you decide to go that route, a GI rating of some sort is a requirement for getting Gold Seal.

Good point. I didn't look at it that way.

Personally I think it is a bit crazy. You can take somebody who has never seen a plane toss them two Gleim books to memorize. Two quick tests and a drive down to the FSDO later and that person can sign off an instrument proficiency check. But them be the rules.

Read the Instrument PTS to learn the error of your argument ...
