Do I need a complex airplane for the cfi reinstatement practical? If yes for the cfi-a practical what about the cfii reinstatement? I'm trying to decide if I want to do the cfi-a or the cfii practical to reinstate my ticket, and getting access to a complex airplane is problematic for me so that would be the overiding consideration. Anyone go through this recently? Also all thing being equal which practical would you choose for reinstatement? (Please reply only if you have actually done the reinstatement ride, I'm only interested in information specific to cfi reinstatement -not renewal or initial, thanks!)

You can just do it in a C-172 or something.
You don't need a complex plane.

Did it myself a few years ago.
I think you can even do it with a designated examiner?

Yeah you can do it in a fixed gear airplane and if you were an instrument instructor before it will be reinstated. And you can go to a DPE

You can, but only certain DPE's can do reinstatements. Our usual initial CFI examiner can do everything from privates all the way to initial CFI checkrides, but he cannot do reinstatements. Makes no sense, but that's what he told us.

Bottom line to this story is to NEVER let your CFI expire. It's much easier to renew it before it expires instead of taking a reinstatement checkride.

That goes for instrument currency as well. Was going to go up with a buddy of mine to shoot 6 approaches, holding, etc. today and due to some aircraft screw-ups, couldn't fly. He'll have to go do an IPC to get current now.

All around, it's just easier to stay current than try to get current!

Agreed.

I haven't given a flight lesson (officially) in nearly five years, and my CFI is still current.

Don't let it expire! You never know when you'll need it....

Agreed. Don't let it expire, a lesson I learned after being furloughed from a regional airline last year.

Having said that, it can be reinstated by taking a checkride with a DPE in a Cessna 172 or whatever. Anything you held on the original ticket (such as CFII or MEI) will also be reinstated by taking just the one checkride.

Best of luck.

He couldn't get anything!?!?!? C152/172/Arrow? I assume he's in the Aero Club and they have something like 9 aircraft all of which you could shoot VOR 31 approaches into KSTC... Or grab an instructor and fly in one of WA's aircraft...

I agree,

I am getting my CFI-II reinstated. Luckily I found a captain from UAL who makes it more of a flight, then a checkride.(DE)

I want to do well, and teach again part time. So to do this I am getting my AGI, re-reading the Kershner manual etc. Wow, I can't believe what I have forgotten. Pivotal altitude. Yikes!!!

Anyway it is fun, and can't wait to jump back into GA.

Hope this helps
