Two months of actual hard work to get my multi-engine instructor Initial, and make a folder with all knowledge areas from the PTS covered. Then 1.4 month of single-engine training to get single-engine commercial addon. I took the CFI one week after the single commercial addon. It then took me about two weeks to get CFII.
For every time mentioned, at least one week was waiting for the FSDO examiner, as it was during busy season.
I took my licenses at a "serious" (-ly" milking) school though, not a ticket factory, at least not at the CFI-level.
About 20 hours of dual, plus another 15 or so solo practice. Ground was typically three-four days a week.
That was to prepare and present lesson plans for all the private and commercial maneuvers and ground lessons.
We flew each lesson and really hammered on the commercial maneuvers. Flying some of the basic private maneuvers was worthwhile. It'd been 13 years since I'd flown turns around a point or S-turns across a road.
It was through a local instructor who did an awesome job. Very thorough and professional.
Took about a month from the time my 8710 was submitted to the Minneapolis FSDO until my checkride.
First time failure rate for the CFI is apparently pretty high so I was fine with taking the time to really get solid on everything. I was probably over-prepared but even then the ride was brutal. At least I passed.
CFII was three straight days and could have been done in two. About 5 hours of flying, some more in the Frasca and then ground going over lesson plans.
It took just under 2-1/2 months for me to get through CFI/CFII/MEI. Keep in mind that it was during the summer between my junior and senior years in college, so I was able to be there every day. Very hard work, but it's doable.
