I heard a rumor that if you are a pilot actively working for a Part 121 carrier that you can get your CFI renewed without taking any recurrent classes. Anyone know if this is true?

Well, it depends on the FSDO that you work with.

FAR 61.197(a)(2)(ii) would be your point of reference for this question. If you've served as a designated check airman, instructor pilot, or chief flight instructor for a 135 or a 121 in the preceeding 24 calendar months, and have documentation as such, you can renew on that. Instructors at 135 and 121 operators are issued a letter from the FAA that spells out the designation, and just about any FSDO will renew a CFI no-questions-asked in this case.

That paragraph goes on to say "... or in a position involving the regular evaluation of pilots..." Now, this could be interpreted as a 141 stage check instructor, or as a 141 chief or assistant chief, or as a Designated Examiner, or as a 121 Captain who works with IOE newbies, or even as a 121 Captain. Renewing on the basis of this will depend largely on which FSDO you go to and which inspector at the FSDO you go to. Some will renew your CFI if you're a 121 Captain without a second thought, but some won't unless you're an IOE Captain or something similar.

Hope that helps.

I have renewed my CFI numerous times using the method stated by Princedietrich. They usually ask for "Proof" of instruction, such as line checks, training docs. with names...etc. It's the only way I know of without attending or taking a class. Good luck with your FSDO !

I would rather pay the 140.00 and do it online or go to the 2 day class.

Just did the Gleim course for $99.95. Except for the painful security module it was classic Gleim. No thrills, no BS, and what you need to know. I learned a bit about the sport pilot stuff, as if a gave a hoot. I'd recommend it.

Our FSDO is 100 yds from our building, just walk across the parking lot and show a Fed my Check Airman letter and they renew my CFI ratings on the spot. Of course there is a disadvantage to the 100 yds, they visit us a whole bunch.

Make sure you keep plenty of coffee and Krispy Kremes sitting in the front office. A fed Fed is a happy Fed.

question...

I had a FAA inspector (airman) on the jumpseat today. I am a current 121 captain, he said if I fill out the 8710 form he will renew my cfi tickets based on our flight together. (ie send off the applications). Is he correct? Is this all that is needed? Did I just happen to bump into a good inspector?

The assumption and backed up by FAA guidance (I read once and I will have to look for), is that a Part 121 Captain regularly evaluates pilots (First Officers for upgrade training) so the CFI can be renewed with out a school certificate or the required number of passed students. It has nothing to do with the aircraft, unless your CFI had s expired then you need an aircraft to re-instate a CFI.

You need to read Order 8710 Chapter 11 for the complete info.

If you had the 8710 he could of renewed your CFI in the jump seat. I use to carry 8710's and Temorary Airman Certificates with me to renew on the spot. But with the crap I get from some airman, I just keep forgetting to restock my brief case.

My last two CFI renewals were both renewed by the local FSDO based on my 135 instructor/check airman status. Just filled out the 8710 and handed over my old certificate yesterday for my next renewal!
