CFI question

hello,

I am planning on getting my CFI, but I am facing some financial difficulties.
I beleive I can start working at home on the CFI knowledge test and get rid of that.
But I heard that there was some required ground hours with an instructor covering the fundamentals of instructing. Do any of you know if there is a minimum of ground instruction that you must do before you are eligible to take the practical test?

And to summarize all that, does any of you know what is the cheapest way (but safe way) of earning your CFI rating.

The flight part is a commercial from the right seat (with a few small additions). The ground is the killer.

Unlike alot of other ratings, the ground isn't just "the weather is bad, let's do some ground". So try to do as much self learned ground as possible before you meet with your instructor.
 
I know of a few people that have gone to one of those fire hose schools where you get the rating in a few weeks. I am not sure of the cost of these schools but it may be an option to investigate. However, in my opinion this may not be the best of ways to get it done. If you have not done much prep before hand you may get overwelmed quickly.

The other problem is the quality of instruction you get at these type of schools. Yeah they probably say you will get the certificate for "X" amount of $$ but all they teach you is what is on the check ride. From my personal experience these type of people usually do not offer quality instruction and can't think outside the realm of what they were taught, therefore they produce poor students.

One thing you might do is to visit some local CFI's or DE's to see what they say. These people may be able to point you in the best direction for your local area.

Having a CFI go over the questions you missed on the FOI knowledge test and then giving you the FOI instruction endorsement in your logbook is acceptable, make sure it is not the test paper they endorse, that is, unless it was failed...:D

OK, hourbuilder, you wanna be a CFI, and you're asking questions on the internet about something you heard? Is that what I'm looking at?... Let me nip this in the bud!! First, lose the idea that anything you hear,...or see on these aviation boards has any truth or authority. There is only the black-and-white of the FAR's and the FAA handbooks of knowledge. Since you asked, and I think you are sincere, I'll start you in the right direction to answer your question, but, seriously, don't expect to get or use "hearsay" info. Get it straight from the horse's mouth, ie., FAR 61, the Private, Commercial, and CFI PTS with all the references in those books, ie, the AFH, the PHAK, the FOI, etc,etc.
To answer: FAR 61.185 Aeronautical Knowledge.(a) A person...must recieve and log ground training from an authorized instructor on:...(FOI).
This means you must recieve and log SOME ground training on FOI. How much is up to the CFI who is endorseing you for the FOI test, 61.183(d) Recieve a logbook endorsement on FOI listed in 61.185.
It's all in there. As a flight instructor, you have to know 61 like a pilot has to know 91. Know where to find everything in the PTS's I mentioned, and you will be well on the road. Rots'aruck!
