Who the hell wants to be a career instructor?
 
Yeah, I dunno...
Figured as much whining about 'I can't find a job' as I read on this board...someone who can't find a job might be interested in spending a year on Hawaii logging more time and flying in Hawaii.

If I were single and met the requirements and didn't have enough time to get a better job, I'd be all over this.

Maybe some people that enjoy teaching rather than flying a big bus in a sky. I had a friend who taught for this company, and he was living a pretty lush island life out there. When they say competitive compensation, they are not kidding.
 
Maybe someone who is a surfboarding fanatic. Probably beats busing tables in a food joint to pay the rent. Great bohemian life style. Maybe you'd run into "Magnum, PI". :)

I am not alluding to your comments or those of any others; as someone whose only professional aviation experience was flight instructing and as someone who worked in three well-known 141 schools, be assured that respect given flight instructors is in dreadfully short supply.

Most people hear only of the typical entry-level type of instructing job, such as low-timers who are hired by their schools, mom and pop FBOs, and the like. But there are other, lesser-known schools that accord instructors the status they deserve in terms of pay, benefits and respect. Two quick examples include the following:

AirStaff, Inc., (International Flight Training Academy), in Bakersfield, California. This school primarily trains students for All Nippon Air, but also has trained for other airlines, such as Alitalia. Equipment includes well-maintained A36 Bonanzas and B58 Barons. The facilities are state-of-the-art. So's the pay; I believe it is at least $30K to start; probably more, and, I believe they top out at $50K-$60K+.

Airline Training Center Arizona in Phoenix (Goodyear), Arizona trains Lufthansa pilots. I probably should have put it first because IFTA is a clone of ATCA. Pay is similar.

My point in listing these schools is they seek career instructors or those willing to commit to the long term. They treat their people well and pay them well. So, why not instruct as a career under these circumstances?

Well said. I never thought of it that way, until some of the above posters mentioned the other options. Everyone has their own niche in aviation and I'm finding more and more ideas as I go.
Nevertheless, I'm so focused on 1200tt that I jump on anything less than timebuilding. For that I apologize.
 
i hope they pay the instructors well.........their fee's are very high..

" 21 Day Private Pilot Course $10,895" ouch. i though i paid a lot on the east coast for my training.

I can offer some proof about the respect that can be given to career and/or committed flight instructors who work for the right kind of organizations.

Aside from my first-hand knowledge of IFTA (AirStaff) in Bakersfield and ATCA in Phoenix (I interviewed and/or visited both), I heard from a friend the other day who has instructed at both. He told me a very interesting story.

He told me that ATCA flight instructors had Lufthansa pass privileges (now, how's that for a benefit?) and he had used his to fly to Germany. The captain heard that he was on the flight. My friend said that the captain came back to where he was sitting, introduced himself, and asked him to come forward and sit in the jumpseat and watch them execute the approach!

Now, how's that for a show of respect? This was before 911 and might not happen as such these days, but it was the gesture that counted.

RE Instructing in Hawaii

John,
I would love to come and instruct in Hawaii, but I don't have the total time you guys are looking for. Any chance you would take a guy with 450 total and 70 dual given?

I don't have anything to do with this place...

I just saw the employment page while I was looking for ME training somewhere besides my FBO on Maui.

Figured with as many CFIs as are here, someone might be into it.

Beats moving to Alaska!
