My CFI expires at the end of Jan. 07. I really don't want to spend the money to take a refresher course. I haven't instructed in about a year, however in the 12 months prior to that I signed off at least 20 students and most passed checkrides on there first try. I don't have my exact pass rate but could find it out. My question is can I go to FSDO and show them that and get my CFI renewed. This is the first time I have renewed so not sure. Also what sort of info do I need to bring to them? Thanks

Call the FSDO and ask for a local guy close to you. I just did what you are asking and renewed mine by submitting for my Gold Seal. Or with the requirements you have you could just renew it by the pass rate. If you have the requirements met for the gold seal you might as well get it. I just got mine in the mail. Renewal is easy, just call and meet up with a DE.

Agreed, Call your local FSDO Today and do not stop calling until you get through. FRom what I hear, every office has their own hoops to jump through and they only accept aplication for renewals on one specific Friday per month. If you miss your Jan window you are in hot water.

However, I am so thankful that I took the Jepesen/ASF renewal course.

First re-read the regulation on re-newing your cfi. Note the time you can get your pass rate in.

Next type out the names, student certificate numbers, what certerficate exam they took, and pass/fail. (neatness does help)

Call the FSDO for an appointment, take your record of students (see above), your CFI certificate, your state drivers license, and if you have a 8710 airman application filled out - it saves time.

If you are prepared, it will go better (isn't that what you tell your students??)

The renewal by way of activity uses a 24 month window. If you have 5 signoffs with an 80% pass rate in that window, you can get a renew. If you have 10 signoffs with an 80% pass rate, and a ground instructor cert, you can get Gold Seal. I don't know how most FSDOs do it, but the local one here will take you pretty much any time for a CFI renew as long as you call and make an appointment.
