I am looking for info on cargo outfits out of SLC. Probably relocating there in the next few months...looking for job leads.
Thanks in advance.

ameriflight flies be-99's out of slc. Its not likely to be hired directly into one of those though. Most people start in OAK, BUR, or PHX in a pa-32r or pa-31 then transfer around the system after a little time there. It seems to take about a year to get into a be-99, but sometimes less.

I'm based in OAK and some guy just finished his checkride after being here 6 months... We are very short on 99 drivers. Best way to get a 99 is to put a standing bid right after you are in the PA-31. It can happen very quick if you are willing to move, and SLC and one hot spot (turbine equipment only) along with Billings.

Amflight

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I interviewed with them a long time ago and did not do well. I have been trying to get another interview with them since and was told by Jay Berstein that since I already had my chance, they would look elsewhere to find pilots. I did hear though that he left Amflight this month and maybe now I will have a chance to interview again. Anybody have any connections?

Jay did leave the company. Just call and ask for Jerry Clark; he's Jay's replacement with recruiting and tell him your story. You have nothing to lose doing that and you might get another interview. Worth giving it a shot IMHO.

Amflight

I will give him a call. I keep hearing that they are in desperate need of pilots in Salt Lake and Billings. Most people don't want to loive there. Funny thing is.....I do. Can't wait to get out of California. Hopefully, I will get another shot.

California

Same here! I used to live in the bay area and my wife and I moved back to Portland last November. Then I get the job with AMF and they based me in OAK... I'm hoping to transfer soon too.

Yeah, Billings is always hurting for pilots... It works like this: pilots place a standing bid for the turbine equipment and wait. Billings comes up pretty quick, and if you aren't too picky you get to go. They usually like to see at least ~4 months in the chieftain first, though. Where in Cali are you? Let me know how it goes when you call!

Out of SLC I would highly suggest staying with AmFlight or maybe Western Express (C-400 series and Metros). Stay away from the smaller guys there, it's scary. Trust me.

Western Air Express, Boise headquarters, small SLC pilot base. Will soon be loosing 3 Metro FOs/C402 CA to SkyWest. Call (208) 343-2524 ask for Mr Mangrum-chief or Mr. Boyland-DO. Check the web to get some basics. Pretty good group of guys work there. Private owners conserned with themselves first (but who isn't). It's a pretty good 135 (mostly night) freight outfit but...it is 135 freight. All in all, a good way to build time to move to a better job. Good luck!

Once again, Jay "dickstein" didn't leave AMF, he was FIRED!!!!! He was pretty much useless. We lost a lot of super guys because of him. I guess he thought he was recruiting pilots for NASA to man the space shuttle.

AMF is looking for guys that know their stuff, specifically IFR skills, and are willing to do the job right. They know everyone will be there for a while and then step over to the regionals. But the time that you are there, they just want you to do a good job, and if you take an upgrade, fullfill your commitment! If you upgrade in the BE-99, they want six months out of you, and I think that's fair. If you just show up for work and do your job safely, you will be basically your own boss. You won't see or hear anybody from management.

Good luck

Agreed-The nice thing about working for amflight is that you can work there for months without ever seeing your boss. Show up on time, do your job and you'll be off their radar screen.

Western air

I have called Western a few times already and neither the CP or DO are available, nor do they return calls it seems. I will keep on harping. Sounds like AMF is a better place now that Berstein is gone. Any idea on the new guy? I just want to get a different job in a different place, and SLC is not a bad place to be.

Doesn't American Check Transport have a base in SLC?

I hear "Air Spur" & "Mountain Bird" on the radio here all the time. Who are those guys? One is probably that Western Air you guys are talking about.

Air Spur is the Fed Ex feeder out of Salt Lake, and is operated by Corporate Air out of Billings. It would be a good company to work for, but kind of hard to get on there. Mountain Bird is Salmon Air out of Salmon ID. They do UPS, and some charter/commuter in Navajos. May be a possibility, they do use some Salt Lake based pilots. I would keep trying Western Express. It's a good place to get some turbine time.

Good luck

Cargo out of SLC

ANybody know what the Western Air runs looks like? Monday-Friday, day/night?

American Check Transport

Just found out they are looking for pilots. Are they a good outfit? Heard they are based out of SLC. Any info?

Western Air Runs...

Mostly 4-5 days a week with about every 3rd-4th weekend. When I was there I logged about 70hr/ month. Some fly more some less. Look @ the web site for more details on the company. Fax you resume to (208) 343-9035 Attn: Ansel Mangrum-Chief pilot. The cool thing is that they will start you out as a Metro FO so the multi/turbine time will start to flow... You will be a "real" FO: fly every other leg, throw freight, do weight and balance, get clearances, preflight...a real flying job. The $ isn't great to start but better than a lot of the 135 freight outfits. ie: as a 3rd year Metro Captain you will make $42,000/yr. The only question is how long will it take to get there.... Good Luck!

Why is Jerry Clark not CP anymore?

AMF is hurting for pilots. I know someone who did not get a job first time round and did second time round.

Upgrades real fast. When I was back there, I spent 5 months in the Lance, due to the TIO-540 ADs, and a year in the PA31 before going to the 99. Now, the latest 99 trainee in OAK has been there 7 months.

SLC Cargo as I see it.. Hope it helps

So here is the SLC cargo scene as I see it.. I currently am flying a UPS contract out of SLC.

Ameriflight is curently hiring directly into the be-99, I have not been hired yet but I am talking to them. I also know there are a couple of people there that have been hired directly into the metroliner (if you have enough time). The info about hiring directly into the be-99 was from both the director of pilot recruitment and the ast. CP. SLC base.

Salmon Air is based out of Salmon Idaho, they have a lot of operations flying the back country in Idaho. They have a Navajo flying a UPS contract and I believe they only have 1 pilot based in SLC (besides the SLC Dir of OPs.). Salmon also has a couple of Navajo's that are on EAS contracts with crews based in Vernal and Moab Utah, that fly into SLC on a regular schedule. The EAS Navajos are flown with 2 pilot crews. The UPS is single pilot. Salmon seems like it would be a pretty good place to work, if you want to fly a Navajo.

Airspur is a FedEx feeder. the previous post is correct, as far as I know.

Western Air Express I see them flying in and out when I am in the SLC area, they are usually flying from the north. They seem like a pretty good operation, however as with all operations there are people that have bad things to say about them.

American Aviation/Lake Powell is who I work for. We have 1 UPS run to Rock Springs, and 1 Airborne run in the Navajo. We also have a Seneca that flys backup most every day to Rock Springs WY. There is also a Turbo Arrow, that flys checks and lab work from Grand Junction co. 7 days a week in th evenings. American is a good place to get a start with, but you probably won't want to stay for verry long. The owner doesn't allow the mecanics to maintian the airplanes like they would like, they are safe, but almost always have a squack, or deferment. The Chief Pilot is a great guy to work for, willing to bend over backwards to help out the pilots. He does a great job standing up for the pilots and building a team. Currently we are fully staffed, but that could change at any time. If you are a competent pilot with the IFR 135 mins with at least 100 hours you may want to throw a resume in.

There is also another company that is flying out of SLC flying with the call sign of Startran, They fly checks down to Saint George and Cedar City. I think the company name is Aeroflight (I think). There Headquarters is in Albequrque(sp) New Mexico. I was talking to one of there pilots and he seemed pretty happy. I also heard that about a month ago they were hiring, (I don't know what crew base).

I hope that this info helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me.
