I 've been with my present company for over three years now, below average pay, wash plane, no schedule, on the road quite a bit, a lot of weekend flying, unwritten that you need to "be at the hanger" even when you are not flying.
Slight upside, no budget on hotels and food,very good maint and training.

I am considering taking a cabin class airplane job that pays much better and has a much improved schedule.
I don't have big shiny airplane syndrome but enjoy the safety and operation qualities of turbine and jet airplanes much better than piston.

Has anyone made the "backward move" how has it worked out? I just want to earn what I am worth without having to beg for every penny raise.

Back down into the weather for me!

No job is perfect but it doesn't sound like you're making a backward move.

Are you going from single pilot/PIC on a piston to SIC on a turbine? If it's more money and less BS, what's the downside? TC

Diddo. What is it about this new job that would make it a step backwards? :confused:
 
Grum, there are jobs out there. The grass is always greener as well. Get a good resume if you don't have one and send or drop off some to flight ops that catch your eye.

DON'T ever sell yourself short in this business. Surf the internet on the typical sites and more importantly seek a good headhunter. Again, surprisingly there are some very good jobs out there.

I agree. Gruman really does not spell out the details of what he is in now versus what he would be flying. It could be considered a negative by future if he went from a corporate jet job to a piston twin job. My guess is that if he looked around, there may be a job with the best of both worlds/
 
I was in a hurry and didn't get too specific, small jets(<20,000lb) and turbo props to small cabin class piston twin, NAAVEEHO. There I said it.

When you make a move you never know what path it may lead you down. I missed out on a job several years ago, thought it was the end of the world, it actually worked out for the best. Be carefull what you wish for!
 
Better pay and a better schedule!! I would certainly say that isn't a step back.
 
Pay, benefits and quality of life. That is what it is really about. If those three were better I would leave my DA-900 for a PA-31. I am past caring what I fly (except I would not fly a Legacy).
 
I agree. It's all about quality of life. If I have to fly a Navajo versus a Lear to be home more with better pay and benefits then who really cares? It also shows any future company you may interview with that your not stuck on the mentality of always wanting bigger and faster. I always look at it as if the jobs offered the same airplane. If the aircraft were the same which one would you pick due to all the other variables (pay, schedule, benefits, etc).

I jumped out of the Fracs due to the amount of time I was away from home.

Found a nice local gig fly a very well redone and maintained Navajo ... glass panel. Fly 4 days a week, home for dinner, maybe 6 overnights a year. Pay is actually comperable to what I was making flying a beechjet, but the quality of live is SOOOO much better. For the first time since having kids, I am their baseball coach, soccer coach and get to attend many of their school activities. That is PRICELESS in my book.

Look at what is important to you, not what type of plane you fly. I'll take less glamour and better lifestyle any time.
