Just started flying freight 747-100/200s and wondering if anyone had recommendations for headset/boom mic combinations? Would prefer not to spend an arm and a leg, but want to protect what little hearing I have left--which probably means ANR, noise canceling, etc. Any suggestions/ideas based upon experience would be most greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Huh ?

Mostly it's white noise, but fairly loud . . . loud enough I think long-term continued exposure would result in hearing derogation. You have to speak up in the cockpit, especially during speeds in excess of 300 knots. (I wear those yellow foam ear plugs when I cut the grass, too.) But if you’re flying a fair amount, it wouldn’t take long to damage your hearing, IMO.

Cheers/ears?

Nah, not that noisy.

(did ya ever fly DC-3s, or single Otters?)

Did the whale for 13 years.
We never used noise cancelling stuff, but the occasional guy would have ear plugs under his Telex 750 headset.
