On this board, not to mention other boards, I have heard alot of talk about ANG. Can someone please explain ANG in more detail? I looked at the website, and I still have some unanswered questions.
First of all, what is ANG? Do you have to be a member of the state to get a slot? How often do you work? Is it possible to get full time slots as a pilot? What is the pay rate?
Is ANG a better avenue to being a pilot than ROTC? What are the advantages of ANG versus active duty?
How difficult is it to get a slot through ANG? Is it alot easier, or are your chances of flying better if you go through ROTC? Do you have to major in anything specific to get an ANG slot? How much flight time do you have to have? What kinds of grades do you have to have?
Here's my story... If any of you have read my previous posts, I just recently dropped out of the AF Academy (cause it sucks, sorry guys), and am currently planning to do ROTC and get an engineering degree. Don't get me wrong, I still want to be a pilot (a fighter pilot preferrably, but I would be happy with anything.) As far as long term goals are concerned, I have considered being an airline pilot, eventually. Don't get me wrong guys, I'm just not using the military as a way to "build up hours," I find great pride and prestige in serving my country, and also think the military could provide some awesome experiences. I have always wanted to fly, but I understand that as an AF pilot you will have to be an officer first and a pilot second.
Anyways, just after reading alot of posts, I want to find out more about ANG and keep my options open. I wish I would have been more open-minded when it came to the academy and wish I would have listened to the people that said it sucked. Oh well, Thanks for reading my post, and I appreciate any input you could provide. Thanks so much!
Very Respectfully,
Leo R.
