Howdy pilots. I'm wondering if it is possible to take an IPC in a simulator, or must there be a flight in a real airplane.

I'm in central Texas, and I was wondering if any of you have used the simulators at Wright Flyers in San Antonio.

Even if I have to really fly for my next IPC, I'd like to mix in some simulator training.

Depends on the level of the sim. Use the current Instrument Rating Practical Test Standards for the ratings task table, then compare it to the FTD/PCATD/Level 1-D sim table.

Usually circling approaches, one engine inoperative approaches, and landing from a circling approach are not able to be completed in anything less than a level D sim.

Exactly. FTDs are limited in what they can be used for when completing various tasks required on an IPC. Level 6 FTDs for example can be used for everything except for landing from a straight-in/circling approach. In that case, the actual IPC needs to be done in the airplane. Basic instrument currency can be done in an FTD though, which is how I keep current myself.

I just had to do a presentation on IPCs for my CFI ground school. The previous statements are correct. There is a knowledge portion, too, but most small aircraft sims aren't certified for the entire IPC. Here is the chart that they are talking about from the Instrument PTS:

Edit: It would appear that full IPCs can be performed in sims Level B and up.

There is no requirement to do the whole IPC in a single airplane or FTD. The portions that can be done in the FTD can be done there, with the rest done in an airplane.

Fly safe!

You're right. I forgot about that little stipulation. Where I work, we're given free FTD time to get instrument current through 66 HIT, but if we need an IPC, we just use that as an excuse to bomb around in a C172 for free without a student. ;)
