Hi!

I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right.

I just got off of a trip, and heard a number of the
"Candler" call signs.

Who are they? I've asked around at our airline, and no one knows.

Thanx!

"What is a Candler"

Yup, ASA.

Our call sign used to be "Acey" but as we expanded out of DFW a few years ago, we aparrently ran up against a Guard unit out there somewhere that uses "Acey" a few times a year. Since they had it first, we had to give it up.

They searched high and low for a new one, and I guess "Candler" was the best we could do. Candler is the family name of a very prominent family in the history of Atlanta. In addition to other things, the Candler family founded Coca Cola.

Coincidentally, there is a former mayor of Atlanta named Asa Candler. Don't know if there's a direct connection there or not.

You must be out west if you've never heard "Candler" before. We're clogging up the airways with our slow climb all over the east.

Just some Atlanta history here, Coke was founded by Dr. Pemberton and was later sold to a man named Asa Candler (no kidding, his first name was Asa) and at one point the Atlanta airport was named Candler field.

wrong PA-44Typed

Asa Griggs Candler was the man who founded the Coca-Cola Company

You're right PA-44Typed, he was the mayor of Atlanta around 1917 when W. Wilson was in office.

atpcliff, and others that are interested there is a book entitled God's Capitalist- Asa Candler of Coca-Cola . It explains the history

I was around when this was decided. As I recall, we wrote the ANG unit and asked if we could keep Acey, as we had used it for 20 years. They wrote back that they had used it for 60 years!

There was a write-in campaign to the chief pilot's office, and flight ops made the final decision. It was a mouthful at first - some guys used "Can't-Handle-Her" or "Can Opener."

Nobody liked my suggestion - "Midget Widget."

by the way PA-44Typed, Nice Signature. I've never read that before. Inspiring! who's Fertiano?

I believe he's some in AOPA because I hear them use that all the time.

Hi!

We fly all over the US, Canada, and Mexico (& sometimes beyond), but we mostly fly from MX/TX North-South to the Upper Midwest, Southern Canada. My last trip was DRT-MMIO (Saltillo)-MCI-ORF-YIP.

Thanx for the info on Candler.
