Assuming you meet the mins (or the competitive mins), chances are probably pretty good, depending on who the guy is. I've been told by the CPO when I went in there to ask about the process that the person recommending is a factor on how quickly a person can get called. The longer the person has been at CAL and the better their reputation, the quicker a sponsor can get his guy into the pipeline. It took my friend about four months to get a call for an interview with two new hires vouching for him (me and another guy). I know of another person that got called for an interview within a month of getting vouched by a guy who's been here for several years and seems to have a pretty good rep. I was also told by the CP that it helps to get as many recs as possible. People working at CAL that have flown with you are the best, but former check airman, other line pilots, captains will help, too... Hell, even getting a preacher from church to say you're a good guy won't hurt, according to this dude.

Hope this helps a little... fwiw, sounds like hiring is slowing down for the summer, so that might drag out the process a little.

What about a retired CO captain with 20+ years service? would this have any weight?

It all depends... it they retired capt has friends in the Chief pilots office and had a good rep before he left... yes

if he was a problem child and really dosnt have any office connections still, it probably will be a wash.

See other thread. Per a conversation with the Manager of Pilot Recruitment today I was told there are enough applicants who have already been interviewed or in the process of being interviewed to cover all classes through the summer. He said interviewing will start again in August.
