Operationally, Cairo is very easy to get in and out of. We had no problems with anything. Stayed at the JW marriott .....nice hotel but from from downtown. Downtown Marriott much closer to everything including the pyramids. If you hire a driver for the day be aware that he will expect you to buy him lunch and he will hang out with you the entire day. Don't be taken back by that. We were a little.....Good thing is lunch is cheap :) Check out the pyramids and if you want a great day excursion check out alexandria. Long drive but totally worth it. Very different from Cairo. Other than that.......have fun. People are very friendly for the most part.

Cairo is a great place but a day is not enough. We stayed at the Marriott in New Cairo City and it was Very Good!! If you get a chance go to see the laser light show at the Pyramids. Don't take a driver that you don't know of the street its not all that dangerous but they will rip you off and every guy there is named Mohamed. The state is about 50/50 Christian and Muslim the Muslims are friendly but just for your money. There is little to no crime to speak of but they do like to blow up the occasional tourist.

You should be able to Hire a car and driver/guide out of the Hotel pretty cheap to take you all over and show you the sights. Be prepared to stop at all of his "friends" places to buy things like Papira's which is the typical thing to take home. If you can get him to stop at local restaurant (where he doesn't get a cut) the food will be much better than the "Tour bus food" that they want you to stop at.

Be prepared for trash! Is 4 feet deep between most apartment complexes.. and its all around the pyramids. All in all its a great stop if you have some time.
Oh yeah the Cairo Museum is incredible, but there again you need some time.. Enjoy and have fun! A few Egyptian pounds is ok to tip in the hotel.

Ditto all the above. Stay at the JW Marriott, close to airport and fortress-like. National museum is a once in a lifetime event and don't be afraid of "renting" a guide to show you the highlights. The guys below are outstanding and wil get you thru the airport like a knife thru butta....
