Yes, the up and down lock switches/sensors is what I was trying to find. Their location is not in the POH and they are not easily spotted from a quick inspection. Anybody know?

A good inspection of the landing gear during pre-flight on any airplane is a good idea. Just yesterday I was landing a C-172RG at North County airport in Florida, and the nut that holds the nose-gear axle in place came off. The axle came part-way off (either during or before the landing, I'm not sure) and the nosewheel was cocked to the left. Despite my application of full right rudder, I was unable to maintain directional control of the airplane on the roll-out. The airplane came to rest right at the left-most edge of runway 08R, where it remained until a tug towed it away.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, check the landing gear carefully before you take-off. I always looked at it, but not carefully enough. I will pay more attention to that nut from now on!
