Anyone have thoughts on this? I was thinking that maybe a C-172 for under $30K. I am an A&P mechanic so I could do the 100 hour inspections and small stuff. What would be the costs of doing such a thing? Would it just be cheaper to buy block time in the FBO's plane?

Also what are the laws on where you can have a landing strip? Just a few miles from my house there is a small dirt strip that looks like just some private people got the land and keep their planes there. Wonder where they get fuel.

you don't need 100 hour inspections unless you carry passengers for hire in it or use it for flight training, so after you get your private, unless you keep having lessons for an instrument rating, you don't need to perform them

If it's his own aircraft he doesn't need to do 100 hour inspections even if he does recieve flight training in the thing.

Try this for grass strip info. This guy has built on and has an email address you could contact him at.

It's great to have an Airplane of your own. But with insurance and other items it's very expensive. We just got a fairly new airplane and formed a Flying Club. We got it so we can build hours for our next rating. Even with the help of our employer sponsoring our Airplane it's expensive. You can do what some people do. You buy a C172 and then lease it out to a school. Then you setup a rate that you can use the plane for. This sometimes on how busy they are will pay for the airplane and sometimes for your flying it. They will do the 100 and yearly maintenance. And even pay the insurance.

Or the other option is that the Sports Pilot class is coming up this year (I hope). This will allow some nice kit planes to be built as Citified. They’re not too expensive and will allow you to build time.

I would make a list with all the pros and Con's and evaluates which comes out best for your situation.
