I broke my leg a few months ago and have just now got to the point where Im ready to fly again. I have a third class medical, was second class at the time of the accident. Is my medical valid now that Im healed up or do I have to go get a new medical? My current one expires June of this year? Appreciate the help..

Hi...

As long as you can perform to the requirements of the medical certificate necessary for the type of pilot operation, you should be fine. If there has not been a significant change in your ability to meet the standards for medical certification after healing, you shouldn't have a problem legally exercising the privileges associated with that medical certificate. If you're still uncertain, contact an AME.

Ref:
§ 61.53 Prohibition on operations during medical deficiency.
§ 67.313 General medical condition, Third Class Medical.

Medical advice

I disagree with Flymach's recommendation about contacting an AME for advice, and here's why.

An AME is not looking out for your interests. An AME is the FAA's industrial physician. He/she is looking out for its interests, which may not be congruent with yours. You want advice designed to further your interests.

I would recommend contacting AOPA if you are a member. AOPA will provide confidential counseling. Another idea is LeftSeat.com.

Hope that helps some more.

Really I'm just worried about who I need to contact, if anyone, prior to returning to flying. My medical is still good duration wise, but did I lose the medical after I broke my leg? I have a checkride coming up that I need to take and need to be sure that my medical is valid. I broke my leg while I had a second class medical, since then it has turned into a third class with 4 months left. I can operate everything normally and occasionally use a cane when Im tired.

Went to leftseat.com and posted my concerns. They got back within 24 hours with an answer. Seems to be no problem. I appreciate all of your help. Thank you.

Makes sense. It's only if you pick up a permanent condition that would be automatically disqualifying that you =may= have an issue.

Otherwise, remember that we self-certify every time we fly. If getting something transient would void the certificate, we'd be contacting AMEs every time we got a bad head cold!

I agree as well, bobbysamd.

However, I wouldn't hesitate to inquire as to certain conditions provided I could remain anonymous...:)
