Boeing may build tankers in California
By JAMES GUNSALUS
BLOOMBERG NEWS
The Boeing Co. said it may produce Air Force tankers at its Long Beach, Calif., plant, enabling the No. 2 U.S. defense company to keep the factory open past 2008 when the last C-17 cargo plane is scheduled to roll off the assembly line there.
Boeing plans to use the 767 as the base model for its refueling tanker as the commercial version of the plane is phased out and replaced by the fuel-efficient 787. If Boeing wins the contract and the 767 is chosen, the Long Beach production line might be reserved for tankers, Chief Financial Officer James Bell said Tuesday............http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/259513_boeingtanker15.html

Long Beach is going to become the place where models go to die, presumably.

It will be a sad day if the former McDonnell Douglas plants shuts down. I live near by and have watched all of the aircraft MD has produced since I was a kid in 1967. I still remember seeing the DC-8's in the final assembly area near Vet Stadium. If they Boeing goes out of business there, I really hope that the City of Long Beach makes a historical landmark of the site complete with a museum. If MD had the right leadership in the eighties, they could have averted the sell to Boeing. Funny thing is that Stonecipher is presently running Boeing's aircraft division I believe, and MD hired this guy to save them after their incompetent upper level manager ran the company into the ground during the eighties with their refusal to come up with new and innovative designs. Idiots!
