I read this today about the recent fighting in Afghanistan. I was pretty sure that the a-10 had a 30mm, not 40? Guns? Did someone put on some crazy big gun pods? I'm guessing that this is just another case of bad media information. This is from MSNBC. Any thoughts?

" The air base immediately sent an A-10 aircraft to Asadabad. It strafed the area with 2,000 rounds from its 40-mm guns to try to flush out the enemy attackers. It was not known whether any of the attackers was hurt or killed."

I doubt this is correct, but if they did put a bigger gun on-WHOAH, watch out!!!

Press

Yeah, the next thing you know it will be they were shooting 2,000 rds from the 105 mm nose cannon.

They never get it right

The press may have gotten any number of things wrong. If it was an A-10, they never get anywhere immediately and they have a 30mm cannon. Then again, they might have sent an AC-130. They have a 40mm cannon, but they don't get anywhere immediately either. Just a little holiday slow-mover humor. Both are great platforms. Merrry Christmas

...but when it gets there, it can do the job for a long time...unlike that mighty Phantom loaded with three bags and BOTH HARMS or that Viper with two bags and BOTH MK-82s!

A little fuel challenged humor............... ;)

You forgot that both the Rhino and the Viper completed 3 sorties to the target, delivered their ordnance (both of them) 3 times and still made it to the bar for happy hour before the Hog got there the first time. You left out the OA-37 and its 4 bags of gas (plus tips), 4 pods of 2.75 rockets and mighty 7.62 minigun. It was faster than the Hog too. By the way...did they ever take the bird screens off of the back of the engines on the Hog? Remember, you're never fuel challenged when there's a tanker around, but as Forest Gump said...slow is as slow does. Happy New Year and gun and Iraqi tank for me. Cheers :D

Takes a lickin...

When I was a lowly cadet at USAFA, I did a research paper on the A-10 (it was brand spankin new at the time) and came to the conclusion that I didn't ever want to fly (in a shooting war) an aircraft that was specifically designed to "take a hit." I figured I'd rather fly something that was designed to avoid getting hit in the first place (I've changed my mind somewhat since then). That being said, the Hog is an awesome platform. It was designed for one thing...CAS and it does it quite well. I never had the opportunity to fly the Hog, but as a FAC worked with them often and loved to watch them circle the hogs. I never met a Hog driver that didn't absolutely love the Hog. Then again, I've never met a fighter pilot that didn't love his own platform. Do you know what the Hog drivers use for a combat simulator? The IP sits you in a Dumpster and throws rocks at it.:D Cheers!

PS. If you want to see some aircraft that made it home with battle damage, there are many great pics of F-4s that made it home from "up North" that have huge holes in the wing and even SAMs stuck in the cans. Scott Grady....nuff said, I won't go there.
