Hello everyone,
I'm a low-timer, around a 1100tt and around 150 multi. My goal is to fly for FEDEX eventually.
Right now I'm flight instructing and flying Part 135 VFR. I'll be getting into a twin in about a month so the multi-time will be coming.
The decision I have to make is this: The company I'm working for has a Part 135 charter operation as well. There is a chance for turbine time there (turboprop only-Cheyenne), when will I get into that? Who knows.
Should I stay at my current job and wait to get into the turboprop and build the turbine pic or move onto a regional and build the SIC jet-time and wait for the captain upgrade then build pic jet-time?
I'm just curious of what FEDEX likes better? single-pilot pic turboprop time, or sic jet-time then eventually pic jet-time?
Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

I think you need to start flying with at least 3 people who end up getting hired at FedEx.

Joining the military is not a bad idea either.

Good luck! Enjoy your flying career as much as possible!

Hello,
I've thought about the military awhile back, but things were pretty tight and they were being really, really selective, I'm not sure how it is currently.
I don't know if I can make the military transition at this point, maybe right out of college I could've gone in, but now I think I'm settled in with civilian flying.

Thanks,
Ken

I've got about the same time as you, I would say single pilot turboprop. But thats just me

Unless you want to take a 10-year detour, the military is not a wise use of your time IF your goal is FedEx. Certainly, many ex-military folks have wound up at FedEx, but I don't think most of them joined the military as a means of reaching FedEx. Had you started that when you were fresh out of college, sure. Clearly that's not the case here.

Turbine PIC. Turbine PIC. Turbine PIC. Turbine PIC.

Those are the first four things you need for FedEx. The fifth is sponsors. Network like mad while you build turbine PIC, and find guys that will walk you to the Chief Pilot and say "Hire this guy." That's what it takes these days, and the network in the military branches is primarily responsible for the higher percentage of ex-military types at FedEx.

Another thought... if you can somehow manage a permanent, part-time job with FedEx Express during the last 12 months it takes you to meet the turbine PIC quals, you don't need to worry about the sponsors. FedEx's Internal Hiring policy will guarantee you an interview, provided you meet the minimum qualifications for the job. It's tough to juggle a flying job to stay current, and a FedEx job to land the interview, but it can be, and has been, done.

Visit pilot.fedex.com to review the qualifications.

EDIT: clipped from the site: "1500 hours total fixed-wing time as pilot-in command (PIC) or first officer (SIC) including a minimum 1000 hours PIC in fixed-wing jet, fixed wing multi-engine turbo-prop, or combination thereof." (emp. added)

Good luck!
:)

I think your chances of getting on will get better as time goes on.When more of the majors start hiring it will be easier.Right now there are not to many companies that are profitable.

Hello,
Thanks for all of the input. Now, hopefully I can get into the turboprop in a decent amount of time. I think that time will be shorter than if I were to go to a regional and get pic time there.

Thanks,
Ken

join the military or have a sex change (assuming you are male). military is 80 percent of the hiring and the other 20 percent is females. What is everyone's obsession with FEDEX. It seems to be everyone's career choice lately?

Oh man, I was waiting for the chick comment. Thanks for not disappointing me. It's funny because I have applied there for over 4.5 years, did the entire chief pilot process and still no call. Maybe I need a sex change to a male.

I hope you are willing to keep your options open, Fedex may never happen, it never happens for a lot of people, and to be honest, I don't think single pilot turboprop PIC has more weight than regional jet PIC.

get a job at ups and get some jet time and then go to fdx, that's been the norm around here lately.

People are leaving UPS for Fedex. It seems the easiest route is getting a couple of people to sponsor you?

never fly for a fedex feeder otherwise will never be hired by them. It's a clause on their internal union. same one that doesn't allowed feeders to fly jets even falcon 20/10

Never heard that one before......I know a few feeder guys who got interviews.....but that was a long time ago......when did that policy take effect and where is it written? As long as you meet all the mins I dont think they really care. Anyone got any hard evidence on this?
