I already get AOPA's Student Pilot magazine (think its great!)

As a student pilot, what other magazines would you recommend that are not out of a newbies league, both in technical babble and/or airplanes?

As a side note: Are there any magazines out there for lovers of old taildraggers and WWI planes?

I was actually going to tell you the AOPA Student Pilot magazine. One of the best all-around good magazines I've found for pilots starting out.

I still read them today when I can find one laying around an FBO somewhere. Helps keep some of the ideas and less-used items fresh!

2 great magazines also
I subscribed to Flying Magazine for a year or two, and I eventually had to cancel my subscription, cause I didn't feel there was much information or entertaining articles anymore.

The Flying Magazine of years gone by was always a great magazine with lots of informative articles, but frankly it's full of nothing but fluff and non informative articles of late. Even the Editorials (which I typically enjoy) were no good.

Just my .02, and take em for just that!

Try Longboard.

Oh right, we're talking about aviation magazines. My two favorites are AOPA Pilot and Soaring. You have to be a member of AOPA and the SSA respectively to have your own subscription, but issues can be found lying around. The school that I work at subscribes to them both.

AOPA Flight Training is good for the basics, but I think it looses its appeal when you have more than about 40 hours. I never bothered with it.

To be honest, I'm not sure that any magazine subscription will really be that helpful in the context of pilot training--I think most of the information you'll find is too watered down to be of much use. Stick with the texts and you'll be golden.

I've been to a couple of Borders books that have had some good magazine selections. Look for a large Borders in a major metropolitan area. I don't recall the names but I've seen a few.

IFR mag, its the best out there even if your a student pilot :) Im sure that mag has saved some lives out there. They dont have all them dumb PFT ads in them and its all good reading. But Flight Training will work too.

you can usually sit down and read a Flying magazine front to back in a little less than an hour. it usually takes me 3-4 trips to the bathroom to finish it all off. nothing but freakin' ads for GIA and DCA. stupid pilot factories...

I'd say Professional Pilot. You can learn about companies that fly their Lear 35's across the atlantic, and not have to worry about going all the way to the hotel, since you just sleep in the back of the plane. After a nice rest in the spacious Lear 35 cabin, you get to head back across the atlantic.

Just kidding about pro pilot, but it is free and makes good bathroom reading. I personally like Business and Commercial Aviation, but it might be a little too technical for someone just starting out.

It's interesting you would say that because I find it more entertaining than others but I'll agree with the less informative part.

What might entertain you, might not entertain me - and vice versa. That's what keeps this great world going around! :)

Flying Mag Sucks, all ads, and if you havent noticed the guys flying are all biased towards the airplane they own-C210, BE58, etc.

My subs. include.

Water Flying-www.seaplanes.org
Northern Pilot
AOPA
EAA

I read them for fun, so I'm not into all the pro pilot mags just yet. Maybe someday when I get more experience.

How, pray tell, might someone like me get ahold of some free issues of said magazine?

ALPA's rag is always entertaining. Kidding. I'll usually grab a Flying magazine from the overhead or grab one from the USAirways Shuttle gates, but like someone else mentioned, it's frustrating to see all the ads for the pilot factories. But sometimes they have some good articles.

Someone mentioned IFR magazine, and although it's been a few years since I've seen one, I do remember finding it VERY informative. I still use the tidbits I read in one article about radar tilt management.

My father used to give me all his ProPilot magazines after he was done with them. But at the rate he was reading them, I might read about the Citation 10's first flight sometime next year! Just a few months ago, he gave me the one with the article about the preproduction Emb-145. Even a few years old, it's still interesting reading sometimes.

I should hope so. Why own it if you're not in love with it? ;)
