The college I attend is offering Beech 1900 type ratings for $4,000. As a person looking toward becoming an airline pilot is it worth it. The faculty at school seem to think it's a must, but all the regional airline pilots I've talked to have said "save your money". The general consensus I'm getting from the folks in the industry tell me airlines don't care because they want to put you through their own airplane and CRM training. What do you folks think?

I say save your money and spend it elsewhere.

I agree with what other people have stated. An airline will train you to their standards on their equipment anyways. Even if your school was offereing an ERJ or CRJ rating, your future employee will give you that rating anyway.

I say go buy some beer and pizza instead, however, if there is a good reason to do it, I am sure somebody will respond.

As far as your Profs. pushing the idea, I would be a little suspicious of their motives on this one.

Good 'cause I don't have 4k anyway =)

Beer and pizza sounds much more realistic.

You'll get the type when you upgrade in the equipment.

Here's a better idea for your $4000. Go to Las Vegas. Find a decent pimp with some even more decent girls. Eh, let's say, $500 a piece. That makes 8 + you = 9-some. Or lots of beer and pizza... that's always good too. Do you realize how much Bud you can get for $4 grand!?!?

B1900 type

Don't bother. Airlines won't be impressed one iota. What impresses them is career progression in a logical sequence which leads to being typed on a company's nickel.

Save your $4K. If you want to spend it on flying, use it for some real credentials that will get you work after you graduate, such as your CFI.

Hope that helps some more.

I must second the above by the famous soon to be "Mr. 5000 "postman, the one and only bobbysamd.

A 1900 type rating is not going to get you very far since in reality the regionals that are flying them are few and far between present day. The airline(s) will train you their way once you are hired and you will get the type free of charge when you upgrade to captain. Save the money and head south of the border in San Diego to TJ, Rosarito Beach, etc, money well spent...:D

I had to laugh when I saw the RAA in Florida advertising that they are selling CRJ types for an astronomical amount of money, worthless if you ask me.

good luck

I would only recommend it if you have a ME ATP already and >2000hrs to increase your chance of getting a job but <1500hrs pretty useless.
By the time you get anywhere close to one it will have been so long ago.....don't waste your money.
