Anyone have a quick rundown on what they emphasize on when teaching Weight and Balance for the first time to a student?

Well, make sure you tell them the difference between weight.........and balance.

The index is really important as well. Be very clear when you speak about a fulcrum, make it so a 3rd grader can understand it.

As far as the W/B forms you use, go over each block and be able to quote the PTS.

What is your "Simple" way of teaching it (per a 3rd grader)?
 
Hope this helps:

Take a model airplane and place it on an upside down coffee cup. Explane that too much weight up front or too aft will tip the plane off the cup, thus being out of the envelope in the POH. Then explain that when we add fuel, pax, and bags, we have to do the calculations to see if we will not tip our plane off the cup by remaining in the envelope.
 
PS--No matter how you explain it, make SURE that you are clear on it before trying to teach it. If you seem confused, the student will automatically think it's hard to learn. You are the subject matter expert (SME) and these guys and gals just learning expect you to have all the answers--that's why the CFI oral is so hard.
