A company I am going to work for is going to buy an airplane. They are thinking of buying a new baron. I have flown in the 55's a little bit, but don't have any experience in the 58s and especially a brand new one. Just wondered if any one has some experience with the newer 58s. What altitude they perform best at, usefull load, good traits, bad ones, how do they handle icing. It is full deice. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance

Fs2004

Everything you will ever need to know about the 58 is on Flight Sim 2004. Just tonight i flew mine to LAX and i was 8 pounds over gross!

Why would any company drop $1.x million on a 6 place 200 knot non pressurized piston twin with the million dollar jets just around the corner?

Seems like such a waste, especially with 100LL prices skyrocketing.

the one I have flown breaks a lot. Various things.

When I was flying it out of MSP, the HSI decided to not work and ATC was questions us about our heading. Then the autopilot circuit breaks decides to pop. We are an IMC at 11,000 ft, heavy heavy rain temp is 33F, colder down below.

It was a little bit scary, but an overall very good experince!!

As for Deice - it has heated props and boosts on the wings, tail and horizontal stablizer. They seem to do the job. I wouldn't want to stay is icing conidtion too long. Heated windshield is really small.

Its a very fun and easy plane to fly. But like someone else pointed out, 1mill jets are coming soon.

I fly a 1980 BE58 with close to 7000 hours on it, has been operated 135 for many years and I have only good things to say. We've only had three major problems with the plane in its history. We are certified for known ice, but never operate in it (the plane will handle ice though). I wouldn't buy a new one, a King Air C90B isn't far behind in price. Look for a used 1990's model.

I don't see the point in getting a Baron for the $$.....have them put an order on an Eclipse Jet and they can get it in 2 years...for the same price!....(+ you get multi turbine time :D )

I've got some good ocean front property in Kansas I'll sell ya too.

You must be kidding! PLENTY of good B58 models for around 300 or less.

I think DAS's reply was about those $1 million jets being just around the corner. How long has Eclipse, Safire, etc. been promising that?

B58 Barons

I got my multi and MEI in a BE-55 and flew it a bunch besides. At MAPD, we used B58 Barons for multi training and the ATP program. It's been eleven years, so I really don't remember the numbers. I can tell you that it's a great airplane and flies not altogether differently from an A36 Bonanza. Of course, you know that a 58 has the more conventional throttle quadrant layout as compared to the 55, which reverses the throttles and prop levers.

Perhaps the thing to consider is whether a B58 is enough airplane for your company. It may want to consider something larger. I would second the comment about flying it in known icing, even with full de-ice. My gut tells me that wouldn't be a great idea.

Hope that helps a little.

Only the newer B58s have the Cessna/Piper/et al 'conventional' throttle vs prop and gear vs flap positioning. Older Barons - of all marques - have the reversed arrangement. I know it's a tautology, but by 'newer' I mean 'since Beech rearranged things'. Can't remember what year that was. Early '80s?
