So, post up your stories about airport cops that take their job WAY to seriously at the airports. The ones who have completely lost sight of why they are there.

Here is my story from last night:

So, we were coming back from Mexico with cargo into Laredo. I called the girl I am hanging out with there and she wanted to come see me for a few minutes. So, I tell her to walk up to the fence at the terminal and we can at least see each other.

Well around 1am we land and clear customs. She parks in the terminal parking lot and starts to walk up to the fence (From the public/parking side). In comes Barney Fife. He stops her and tells her she can't walk up to the fence. Because it is after 10pm and the terminal is closed! And she needs to leave right now. I asked her to put Barney on the phone but he refused to talk to me. Well, she goes back to her car and takes one more lap around and I wave goodbye from about 100' away.

Then inside customs, Barney comes in to talk with us. He said the terminal closes at 10pm and she was trespassing. It was a breach of security for her to be on one side of a 12' barb wire fence and me on the other. And if she took one more lap around the terminal road he was going to arrest her for trespassing! The Custom agent was agreeing with us that Barney was being ridiculous.

I asked him ... so what if you want to get your car out of the parking lot after 10pm? He muttered something about you should call the police. I think he realized how stupid it sounded.

Yep, I think he dropped his silver bullet on the way out. What a @#$#@$#

Wish I'd had a camera with me....

There was a zone at terminal 2 in FLL marked "Pick Up & Drop Off ONLY".

In the same zone was a sign that read: "NO Stopping"

I stopped to pick-up my kid...

Cop: (waving me to move) "Keep moving!"
Me: "I'm picking up my kid, she's right there."
Cop: (agitated) "The sign says 'No Stopping'! Get moving!"
Me: "But that sign says "Pick Up"!
Cop: (looks at sign, leans on my window) "Ignore that sign. The 'No Stopping" sign is the boss."
Me: (daughter in the car now) "I see... Can I go now? The sign says 'No Stopping'."
Cop: (glare)

I feel safer every day!

Personally, my vote goes to the FAA Air Carrier Inspector who, a few years ago, who went around grounding the "unairworthy" general aviation aircraft he came across while walking across an airport ramp. There were write ups about him in most of the aviation magazines - as I remember, he “red tagged” a single-engine Cessna that had the engine removed and weights placed in the engine compartment to keep it from falling on its tail. Under the comments, he wrote that the engine must be installed prior to further flight – or words to that effect. Duh!!! This guy also tagged a twin Cessna with Q-Tip propellers for having unrepaired propeller “ground strike” damage. Huh???

As they say in Mexico - Que bozo mas grande.

Airport Cops

My favorite, back when the LAX FSDO was co-located with LA Approach and the USCG there on Imperial Hwy, I had some business at the FSDO so I flew a flight school airplane over for a visit.

I landed the airplane on RWY 25L and parked on the FSDO ramp.

While walking into the FSDO an airport cop standing outside the security fence said "Hey, STOP how'd you get in there?" "I flew in in that airplane" I said. "STOP NOW, you can't do that!" he responded.

"Yes you can, it's an airport ya know!!" And into the FSDO I went.

Unbelieveable ...

I got yelled at by an airport cop in Phoenix a few years ago picking up my wife. It was busy, open spots were few and I pulled in near the curb between an SUV and a "no parking" zone. Actually, my front bumper was probably 3 feet into the No Parking area. Just as I realized this, with my wife standing there, this old airport cop just starts berating me, pretty intensely, for "ignoring" the no parking zone. To make him happy, I started to back-up and he got even angrier. Pretty much implying I was a moron for backing up in an area where traffic "obviously" only flowed one way. I was dumbfounded at the logic in play. So I threw my wife's bag in the trunk and drove off...what can you do?
