Exactly how does one "pass" a backround check? I understand passing a checkride but a backround check? What are the practical standards? Or is it arbitrary.
 
Usually it means a criminal history check (e.g. run-ins with the law, etc.) employment/education/military verification, and a check of your credit report. There are some disqualifying crimes that will prevent you from getting hired such as murder, aircraft piracy, and a handful of others. Otherwise, they're verifying the information you put on your application is true. I'm not sure if there's a minimum credit score they're looking for, but if your credit shows you have issues paying bills, there could be a problem.

I thought that a poor credit score was one of the best ways to prove you were a pilot...
